SW Beach Setup
Hi all,
Have decided to get serious with my beach fishing down here in the South West so im after some help/reccommendations on a suitable setup. Had enough of the cheapo $100 10ft combo and its time to upgrade. Will be used mainly to target tailor, salmon and mulloway- and whatever by catches come by. Originally i budgeted $400 for the setup but if i really have to it can prob strech to $500. The catch is i want to buy the reel from bcf (yeah i know) because i have some vouchers for there.
Wouldnt have a clue what setup to go with so im hoping some of the experts on here can offer some suggestions and help. Had a quick look at the Shimano baitrunner reels, dont look pretty but seem pretty good feture wise. Not sure what size reel would be best though? 5000/6000/8000? And what lb mono to run? For the rod im thinking something around 12ft so i can punch it out into the surf.
Any help or recomendations would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Sam.

a penn spinfisher
a penn spinfisher is a bit cheaper around 150-200 bucks but one of the most reliable and proven reels their is, they come in sizes i think to 950 and tough anything

Sam, I also think that the
Sam,
I also think that the Penn Spinfishers are very good value for money, I have two of the 850SSM.They are a good solid reel that will give you very good service and can take a few knocks. The 750 or 850 size should be fine for what you are planning.
BCF have these for around $220 but in reality you can pick them for around the $120 mark if you look around. You might even luck out and find the reel & rod in a beach fishing combo.
Good Luck.... Steve

Wet Dreams I had a look at the BCF online shop and there are
a couple of good options.
I would have a look at the LiveFibre rods in the 12 foot or 13 foot size. They are both two piece. The 12 foot comes in at $199 and the 13 foot Surf Trophy is $239.
You couild match eiether of those to a 6500 Shimano baitrunner at $265 or a 950ssm Penn Spinfisher at $229.

awesome reel . i've got 2 of the 4500's now.
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

xzoga rod, maybe a stradic reel
Hi Sam
I recently got a xzoga 10ft surf rod that Matt from Tackleshack got me. Its awesome and handles all my surf needs. Not sure where abouts you live but Tackleshack is really good. They always do their best to give you a good deal on anything. Matt showed me his 12ft Xzoga rod and I wanted one straight away, unfortunately I'm out of money and the missus won't let me get it so it's not gonna happen any time soon. I got a Shimano Twin Power 6000 and it matches perfectly.
I also got a 12ft old school surf rod but it's too heavy for me to use. I can barely cast it as I am only 5ft 9 and 80kg.
The comfort of the new graphite rods is ridiculous and is the way to go for me.
Definetely make sure you check out some of the new lighter rods as you'll be holding them for a long time and might get tiring with a heavy rod.
I reckon you could get a stradic for bout $250 to $300 from BCF.Most of the shimano's are pretty good though. I had a look at the new Baitrunners but not really a big fan.
I use 20lb mono for tailor. Probably go heavier if you need.
I'm sure if you call the Tackleshack or Oceanside tackle they'll give you some excellent suggestions and will be willing to help.

just a stupid suggestion ??
just a stupid suggestion ?? if your chasing mulla's and salmon why not get an alvey ?? yeah i know its got no gears but it aint going to die from salt and sand either .. plus the line capacity kills a eggbeater (in case you hook a ray/shark)
just a sugestion :)

Yeh Alveys for hard surf fishing
The reels are very well priced and bullet proof. No issues with dumping in the sand and then simply washing in the surf.
Sure you have no mechanical drag but even more reason for toughness in that environment. And its not hard you use your palm as drag. And due to reel you get much better casting distnce than an eggbeater.
I would seriously have a look
Mine is still going strong (both rod and reel) and I bought them mid 80's.
Was in bcf last night as a mate wanted some advice. There is plenty of options but I would go a Wilson or Live Fibre myself. In the bunbury shop they were between $120-230.
Otherwise is you prefer an eggbeater then as above go the penn spinfisher but same brand rods.
There are plenty of us here in the SW that surf fish.
Where you located? I can teach you how to use an alvey.
Got the perfect surf beach spot but its a two day drive......

Wow big response
Thanks heaps for all the advice from everyone, really appreciate it. Sorry i havent replyed sooner. Well it seems that the setup to go with is the Penn Spinfisher and a Wilson LiveFibre, will go check them out then.
I didnt actually consider an Alvey cuz ive never used one before. I like my eggbeaters but could always give it a shot.
Damo6230 im in Harvey. How hard is it to use an Alvey?
Thanks again everyone for all the advice.

Very easy to use an Alvey
couple of minutes to show you the basics and then some practice.
but the penn can be used for mutli applications (boats etc) where as the alvey is pretty much limited to beach/rock landbased applications.
none the less very good combo.
happy to show you the ropes and use mine (live in bunno) then make your decision.
cheers

alveys
alveys are a good choice if you want one of the toughest reels on the market but it can get annoying if you have the smaller models the retrieve is slow and they are pricey but they wont let you down, its not hard to use alveys just like learning to use a baitcaster or any other reel for the first time

Decisions Decisions
Well went and checked out all the above mentioned toys today and they all look the goods. The spinfisher/livefibre combo seemed like it would work pretty well together.
But the Alvey reels were very well priced and do seem pretty bulletproof thats for sure. So im still considering it. Might have to take you up on the offer of testing yours sometime in the next few weeks Damo6230.
Hard decision haha.
