steelhead fishing-COLD!

Hey all,

Thanks for all the info about Karratha fishing. I figure you bunch are spoiled over there in WA-warm weather and sunshine!! Here, on the West Coast of Canada, our winter fishing can get pretty cold...we chase steelhead trout (sea-run rainbows) from Januray to April. The one in the pic is a 6 kg fish my wife caught this year...they love bubble-gum pink plastic worms!!!

That looks too cold to fish.

Nice fish your wife has, but I think I would wait until the snow has gone and the sun comes out. :)

Beautiful fish

it looks freezing - kneeling in a puddle shows the fish is more important than cold knees - committed lady.

They sure fight well...lots

They sure fight well...lots of runs and jumps. Plus, here the rules are you have to fish with a single, barbless hook, so you lose a lot of fish when they jump and throw the hook...we call it "long distance release"!

Haha

Long distance release Laughing, still, no doubt adds to the sport - puts another layer on it. You have to hook them AND keep them on.

Would love to see some jump/hook throw shots!

It will be like hitting a wall when you get off the plane at Karratha airport. You will definately love the fishing up there though.
Thanks for sharing your pics. That's a great fish.

Sounds like I better leave

Tue, 2008-11-04 07:53

Sounds like I better leave my snow boots and snow jacket behind!!Wink Our weather is cold and wet for 4-5 months a year, from November till March or ealy April. We get heaps of rain and often you don't see the sun for weeks at a time...so, you either go fishing in bad weather or you don't go fishing!! :(....so we just put up with it and fish anyway!

I look forward to the sun and big fish in Karratha...you bunch are spoiled over there!!!Smile

Hey Harro! Yup, that spot is

Hey Harro!

Yup, that spot is on the Vedder River, which is about 15 minutes from my place. It has a hatchery at the top, so there are a lot of fish that come back to spawn in the river ever fall. We get coho salmon, chinook salmon, dog salmon, pink salmon and steelhead trout. Lots of people fish it, because it is only an hour's drive from Vancouver, but the fishing still can be good, especially on days when the weather is bad, not so many people out there fishing.

Green float?

Tue, 2008-11-04 19:50

Beautiful looking country there Steelhead.

What's that green item just outside the tip of your wifes rod? Is it some kind of float to keep the soft plastic at a set depth below the surface?

Hey Big John!   Yes, that

Wed, 2008-11-05 01:49

Hey Big John!

Yes, that is a float. We call them "dick floats"...The way we rig it is the float is pre-set at a certain depth, and we use a pencil lead-a round (pencil diameter) and about 5cm long piece of lead for the weight. The bait or lure is attached about 30 cm from the weight.

The fish are sluggish because of the cold weather, and are not actively feeding-they are on their spawning run, so they only have one thing on their minds!!! So, you literally have to hit them on the nose with the bait or lure to trigger a strike. Most folks figure they hit more out of anger than hunger.
