Spanish Mackerel Trolling

 Hey Guys,

just wondering if a penn 10-15kg rod, with a daiwa seagate 50h spooled with 15kg mono and a wire trace is sufficient for mackerel trolling. Alao, what are the best methods or ways of trolling dead/rigged baits for Spaniards.

Thanks

My go to rod was a 10-50kg with about a 25/30 size overhead. I had 37kg platypus though for the "just in case" and was bullet proof for trolling. I prefer 60-80lb mono/fluoro for trace and just change it every second or third toothy critter as i've never had any luck with single or multi strand wire. This was using deep diving lures though.

Gotta agree. 10-15kg rod & TLD 25 is good & definitely mono on a trolled lure/bait.
Braid is not very forgiving when a big hit happens.
Mono has give in it, I use 15 - 24kg IGFA approved mono.

I have a TLD20 with 10 kg mono and don't run any wire, accounts for mackerel ok.

your gear will be more than fine for macks.
I also never run wire trace.

go for the deepest divers you can troll and wouldn't worry about trolling dead baits unless on downrigger. Macks are bottom fish.

also prob best to not use IGFA mono if you are not going for records (better to break over not under)

Set a couple of big red head lures behind the boat like large rapalas, they work well in the first 5 meters or so then become a little more ineffective after that, large halco crazy deeps in chrome pink are good too if you can get them to go to their most effective depth around 6 or 7 meters, that has accounted for plenty for me.
