Sherbs' Shocking Experience

Sherbs and I decided to go for a quick mid week fish at one of the local Perth metro beaches last evening to see if there were any tailor or mulloway hanging about.

We arrived at one of our favourite inner metro spots to find that the wind forecast was a bit off and it was absolutely howling - and there was still a fair bit of weed hanging about.

We toughed it for an hour or so and Sherbs managed a mini flathead and I landed a "horse" of a Wirra before we decided to head up the coast and give the north wall of Hillarys a try as it would be protected from the big southerly.

We hadn't been there long when Sherbs reported that he had a knock and that he was on.

He soon had this really weird looking, wiggling creature up on the rocks and was calling if for a baby shovelnose.

He soon found it wasn't one of those when he went to gently unhook it to return it to the water. He must have jumped a few inches off the ground when shock of the "Numb Ray" kicked in.

After that it was long nosed pliars and a quick toss back into the water so it could swim off.

Luckly it was only a little tacker and not a bigger version like the one pictured above or we might not have been laughing about it after.

That was about the highlight of the night as we only landed a few small fish between us after that and then called it a night.

"The Numb Ray (Hypnos monopterygium) is a common species that divers need to be wary of as it able to deliver a very painful electric shock.

Divers often accidentally encounter a Numb Ray by kneeling on the sand and a nasty little electric shock lets them know they are lying on a Numb Ray!"

Got one on the crayboat...

Thu, 2009-11-26 08:20

...years ago at Jurien. Told the other deckie to flick it out of the scupper with a knife and he got booted. Then I said "use that wooden bait lid over there to flick it" but it was wet so he got booted again!

Those two little "knobs" on top of their heads must be like positive and negative battery terminalsLaughing

been "zapped" at least a dozen times myself, once in Yanchep lagoon grabbing crays and the rest in NSW pushing my boat out or pumping Yabbies, they can pack a fair wallop, my old dog used to get zapped all the time chasing blowies

Luckily this one was really tiny - only about 8 - 10 cm across

I had a nasty experience with a big one when I was doing scuba lessons many years ago. We were doing the lesson off a northern beach in Sydney and one of the things we were practising that day was clearing your mask. We were floating down to the bottom and had our masks off when I felt this huge thump right in my groin. Thinking I was being attacked by a shark I raced to the surface only to find the instructor already there cracking up laughing. He told me it was a big numb ray and that I was very lucky I was wearing a "spring" suit at the time or my future as a father might have been a lot different.

normally they are buried in the sand with only the two little lumps in front of the eyes sticking out...very hard to see, a big numb ray can be 2ft long, so if you see that shape with  2 lumps about 3inchs apart steer clear

Keep one Numb ray on board, if you get a flat battery, you can use him  as jump starter kit!

Thu, 2009-11-26 16:30

But my hand as been bad all day, It could be from pulling in weed and fighting the strong winds with heaver sinkers on as well

Or it could be that little prick of a fish.

As soon as I saw the photo I knew exactly what the topic was going to be without reading a word. They can deliver a fair boot and can reload in seconds.
Haven't been hit myself but have seen heaps of deckies cop it,for some reason the skipper always had something more important to do elsewhere right then, like trying not to laugh before it happened.

I should watch out for these buggers, as I am a little bit of a ray magnet. Sometimes intentionally, but sometimes not…  Good about your hand.
