Shark culling.....

I see no problem with culling sharks. We cull kangaroos, emus and I'm sure some other harmless species whose  only crime against humanity is to chew up some grass or some crop or another. Some people will kill snakes even. We are in their DOMAIN........

Sharks on the other hand are killing people. We have been going into the ocean from day dot so why not make it a safer environment for us to enjoy our passions.

Certainly an interesting

Certainly an interesting debate and one  I have a major interest in.

By venturing into the ocean we are always taking a slight risk but no more than stepping out of our front door each morning. While
I do feel there is a huge need to implement and develop  methods to protect against attacks, the water is not our domain nor should we be allowed to play god when it comes to nature. There are methods in development at present that have been a success in other countries so let's research and develop them for use here in WA. Every time we humans mess around with the eco system we mess it up and there are countless examples to prove this. Once you remove the apex predators, you have a major problem and an imbalanced food chain which could have major repercussions in the long term. Throughout history every time we try and remove or introduce animals to the eco system it has been a complete cluster fuc*

I like many people living here am a recent arrival, the combination of a huge influx of people over thhe last 10 years who now venture into the water mean a far higher  chance we will come into contact with sharks. Combine that with the media who like to sensationalise everything and we have a situation that is blown out of proportion.

In my opinion a "cull" is not the answer - we need to get out of the mentality that we humans have... "if we dont like it, let's kill it" It has never worked before so there is no reason or evidence to suggest it will work now.

Noxious

Congratulations on going to uni mate we are all proud , if you we fair dinkum about the environment you would certainly agree there are more important issues than protecting a species of shark that time and again attacks humans. Nobody will miss them - we can't eat them, interact with them or otherwise , just like the mosquitoes we spray off in the millions every year. If we cared about Eco systems etc nobody would fish or dive or drive the boats up and down rivers etc etc it all does damage in some way. Maybe you could study coral bleaching instead ? Surely we will miss the barrier reef more than great white ? Maybe when you are a little older see how you feel about your kids going down the beach for a swim after another 20 years of unchecked breeding.

 I forgive you. Was more

I forgive you. Was more aimed at the " I studied something at uni so my opinion is worth more than yours " attitude. Nobody knows everything about it except that there was a hell of lot less attacks when they were being hacked up on a regular basis. The world didn't  come to an end and the fisheries didn't  collapse when this was happening last time so why are we so reluctant to take them out. Don't need a masters degree to see more sharks =more attacks.

Hi Mate, The idea of an open

Wed, 2013-12-11 09:56

Hi Mate, The idea of an open forum is to voice opinions and debate. I am 36 years old, Married and long out of Uni my friend. I simply have an interest in the subject as do many other people. I do agree with some of your points and both the barrier reef and sharks are important and coral bleaching is of course an issue. Although I completely disagree that we would not miss sharks. It's not a case of one issue is more important than the other after all this post is related to Shark culling as far as I can recall? I just don't agree with culling Sharks it's as simple as that.
In future it might be an idea to get your facts straight before making assumptions about people as you don't know me from Adam.

nice Mulloway in your avatar by the way :)

Shark Barrier

Wed, 2013-12-11 10:23

Funnily enough I happened to be in the company of someone who is involved in the manufacturing of this shark barrier and as dumper said it is a semi rigid substance and from how they described it to me I don't think we will have a problem with anything getting caught up in it.

 Hats of to Troy B,

i think that the decision to kill sharks that frequent populated beach would of been a hard one to make but at least it is and could lead to a reduce in human killings.

Who's gonna get the jaws?

Wed, 2013-12-11 16:04

Who's gonna get the jaws?  Could sell em at auction.  If they are big GW I will offer $1000

I personally dont know which way to think.  I'm chicken scared of sharks and gave up surfing years ago.

I do support the resumption of pro shark fishing, especially in the Pilbara.  There really are millions of the bastards, and they are greedy, hungry, f&*&%#$%^ who eat way too many fish!
