seasick pills

hey guys, i'm going offshore for the first time this sunday with peter mac and im worried about getting seasick and ruining the trip. Realising there might be several brands of pills, could anyone steer me towards a good brand that will definately fix me up? I have a strong immune system towards medictions so preferebly something strong would be good.

Thanks for any help.

Pineapple

Fri, 2009-01-09 18:24

The night before eat plenty of pineapple, preferrably the chunky stuff---won't stop you being sick, just let you taste the pineapple twice.joking

No seriously, avoid anything with milk in it before you go,eat dry biscuits.Anything with ginger is a big help, especially the ginger lumps.
If you feel queasy out there avoid looking down at you feet, going into the cabin if there is one.Keep in the fresh air and try to look at the horizon,it helps. And don't forget the quells or whatever brand you select.

Hope you have a good trip and get a pb fish

kwells

Fri, 2009-01-09 18:24

have some breakfast, then take two kwells a good half hour before you go in the boat.  Also you can get ginger tablets from the chemist, I'm told they are also very good, while you are in the boat, say after 4hrs of fishing, take two ginger pills and that should do you till you come in, well hopefully.

Afraid not, if you get really bad seasickness

Fri, 2009-01-09 20:18

it means you have the eye and ear imbalance and thasts what causes sea sickness unfortunately.  I can't sit in the back seat of any car for long distances as I'll be yelling stop I'm going to be yuckie spewie.  My sister is worse than me, at lease I can take kwells and go fishing but my sister just gets sick walking on a jetty.

Travacalm original for me

Sat, 2009-01-10 08:48

And ginger nut biccys. Tablets make ya feel a bit doughy. I stopped takin them the night before cause I found it hard to get up in the morning. Make sure ya eat something for breaky and something to nibble on through the day. Don't have a big night before ya go out. I agree that it's in the mind a bit and thats why nibbling, drinking and catching fish helps. Gives ya mind something else to think about. Don't look down, make pleanty of rigs up on land. Beers work well for me to and makes the fish bite, as soon as ya crack one ya sure get a bite. Same applies for having a leak. Have a good day out there.

GO BLUES.

Thanks for advice, I was out

Mon, 2009-01-12 05:55

Thanks for advice, I was out yesterday (Sunday) drifting the west side of 5 Fathoms and was horribly sick the entire time. I felt like I was going to die. I did provide plenty 'free' burley which my mate is positive helped us get into some good fish, including my first Dhu! I promised myself that next time, I wont go out unless Ive taken some kwells or similar.

Good advice from all of us

Mon, 2009-01-12 08:35

I've also found that if I feel a bit yuckie I'll eat half a sandwich then I'm ok, I can last 4-5hrs before I say to Bob its time can we start to head home.  Travelcalm are horrible for me I just go to sleep & feel quite yuckie, lost a good fish nodding off, well you can imagine what the old fart said. I can't look down or bait my hook, take the fish off if caught, Bob has to do that for me.  I really get peeved off with myself as I'd love to go deep but to no avail, I can go out about 10 miles which in Leeman (thank goodness) there is good ground.

Mon, 2009-01-12 08:22

I was talking with a bloke a couple of weeks ago and he swore black and blue that he prevents sea sickness by taping his 2nd toe to his big toe. This sounds crazy but he was fair dinkum.

In regard to pills I find the Travacalm the best, the Kwells give me the dry horrors and also make me feel queezy.

Drinking decent quality Ginger Beer also seems to help, as long as the drink is cold and no the Schweppes crap.

Cheers Steve

Scop

Mon, 2009-01-12 08:46

The best by far if you can get this is Transderm Scop pads. They use to be available in Aus but now you can only get them in some countries. It contains Scopolamine and is fantastic. Can make you see double and can cause tiredness but seeing 2 fish on the hook is not bad. The pads work for up to 3 days and is almost perfect. Can get it over the net. I use to always recommend and prescribe this.

hmm ginger beer, ima try

Mon, 2009-01-12 12:49

hmm ginger beer, ima try that. Travacalm also provides velcro wristbands that work by having these notches on them which in turn works on your acupunctural pressure points that works against sea sickness. I suppose for anyone that gets chronic seasickness you could use travacalm originals or kwells + travacalm ginger tabs (theyre non medicated so mixing is fine) + travacalm wristbands +ginger lollies +ginger biccies +ginger beer. If that doesnt work, god help you lol.

tried everything

Wed, 2009-01-14 10:55

I'm not a big sufferer of sea sickness however I have been sick out on boats(sometimes self induced from the night before)
In my experience the absolute BEST item is Travacalm. I have never yet seen anyone take it and get sick on any boat if they took Travacalm. This included two people I know who love fishing but would only ever land base because they had tried diff tablets etc and still got sick. Now they use Travacalm and even eat out on the boat. The other one already mentioned is the SCOP patches. We used them a lot in the early 90's when on charters for an entire week or when we were fishing our own boats for a few days straight. They were taken off the market due to side effects. They could be left on for 2/3 days but some people didn't read instructions and would consume vast amounts of alcahol and wonder why they were trippin out.
Stick with Travacalm original in the blue box.

only one thing works

Thu, 2009-01-15 07:50

only one thing works for me, thats Avomine.
take one about an hour before going to sea and another about an hour at sea and I am fine. If I don't then I'm a burley king of note,,,,,ask anyone who has been fishing with me.

Can only be got at certain pharmacies and is not always easy to get. I was recommended them by a pilot who flew loads of bumpy routes and has air-sickness problems.

cheers
