Sargent Bakers

Has anybody tried eating Sargent Bakers?

We got a heap yesterday and some of them were real hooters. A few got cut up for bait and the flesh was nice and white which would suggest that they would taste OK

Cheers Steve

if you don't mind bones they are suppose to be nice, but personally i use them for bait only, though i have heard from some people that eat them they are very tasty.

i just caught my first today and he was bigger than i expected.  When using them for bait, do you just use a filet?  or use them aslive bait??

Steve - SBs

Tue, 2008-07-22 08:31

I agree with the others, SBs make great bait, but the do have a hell of a lot of bones and aren't rated that well eating wise. IMO, better to use them as bait and catch some better to eat (and with less bones).

Caught heaps down here and some of my best fish have been pulled up after using SB as bait.

Still, many would say (and I've found it to be the case) if you catch them, you are usually on good ground. So it's worth immediately cutting them up and dropping baits straight down.

on the east coast who swear by them as livies for fin and
marlin , can't see why it'd be any different over here.
