Rod for Quobba WTB?
Submitted by Rig on Tue, 2010-06-01 18:48
Hi Folks
Am looking at doing a trip to quobba soon and i require a rod probably more suited to that purpose. Something i can flick lures and metals out with but has the balls to tame a spaniard and lift smaller fish ie snapper up the cliff. prob about 9 or 10 ft
i am gonna match it with a spheros which i am also looking at buying due to its fast cranking speed with about 50lb braid
my budget is undetermined at the moment in that i dont want to spend the earth but i do need something that will do the job
cheers

Yep that and the new HR
Yep that and the new HR Pirate range.....10'6 PE 4-6.
I probably wouldnt recommend lifting any fish over 2-3 kg as the fish flapping about can jerk the rod while its under a lot of load, and possibly fold too far and snap!!

Daiwa Monster mesh
Rig. Try pricing a Daiwa Monster mesh MM832PS-SIC, its eight foot three inches, 2 piece connection at the butt and a PE rating of 6-8.

i fish it often
have broken many rods up there from $150 rods to $500 rods. DONT pick up fish on any rod!! a daiwa saltist 7.6 foot 20_40 lb 1 piece has come out strong at $270. then i use a 1 piece uglystick 7.6 ft 12kg at $180. these rods will take a hammering up there and arent tooooo costly. but i now use the leemax 2 piece 10.6 ft 30-50lb i brought from the tac shack, it is a lovely rod to use. it is light, long for castinng, strong enough to cast 100g raidar lures and at $170 it isnt a bad buy at all. POST the pics when you get back wont you!!!

Last couple of times I've
Last couple of times I've been up there I just used my 8 foot GB Ugly stick. They're nice and cheap and handled everthing that took a bait or lure whilst on Garths rock (Trevally, Cobia, Tuna, Spaniards, etc). Will need something different if ballooning.
The only problem I've found with a longer rods is that when you try and get it within gaffing range you have to stand back from the cliff edge and then you can't see what the fish is doing, this is when the big noah's come along and steal your fish.
