Rod Building?????????
Submitted by mako magic on Sat, 2009-05-30 14:09
Well years ago i know personally i used to do alot of rod building, pretty much for myself and a few friends, mainly as a hobby and to build the colours i wanted.
Now the thing is that these days there are less and less people doing it, partly because of the good quality rods available at a good price these days and not really the need to buy custom rods and also that it seems less and less components and blanks available in shops
I have started getting back into it again, mainly since i am doing all the rod repairs at the shop and just think its something that people really should get into.
So would more people like to get into it if the parts are available or its just in the too hard basket for most??

I've done a few guide
I've done a few guide replacements but I've never bothered building rods because getting a lathe is a pain in the ass more than anything.

myth
you dont actually need a lathe, though it helps, just a rotisserie to aid in the drying of the epoxy, and they arent too expensive, years ago i only had a set of rollers and done all my turning by hand lol

for me
its a combination of the outlay to buy the gear and having a dedicated space/work area to do it.

I agree with Huggy.
I like to do my own repairs and servicing (with advice from the pros of course). Same with my reels. having the right setup in important. One thing that would stop me building rods from scratch is that I have no idea really what consitutes a good rod. I generally go through the racks and pick one that seems to feel really good and is of the right brand with a good reputation. Based on my home made surf board efforts in my younger days, I may well draw some pretty harsh criticizm and would most likely fish on my own more than I do now LOL.

I like to build rods, though
I like to build rods, though i find that it costs a lot more to build the rod you want than it does to just buy one off the racks. I do rebuild a lot of my own rods though.

Hey Mako
Id be interested to learn although ohnestly, its just easier to buy a rod pre made fit for purpose.
You could run a how to course teaching people how to do it, Id be keen to take part just to see how its done.

Half my rods...
...have been built by me, and the majority of them are at least 15 years old. Have done very few recently because it's too hard to get blanks anymore. Even a big mob like Bluewater (at least the one in Melville) only has a limited selection. There are heaps available online, both Aussie and overseas, but I really have to be able to go into a joint and pick the thing up/wave it around/load it/find the backbone before I can make any decisions. Nothing nicer than catching a good fish on a rod you've done yourself but yeah, too hard to find the right components.

certainly seems to be the
certainly seems to be the main issue, component availabilty, and agree oz, nothing better than catching some good fish on a rod you made yourself.
Personally the next rod i will be making is looking like a sabre 6455H fully rollered and possibly looking at putting a leather foregrip on it to set it off.

Sounds good, I'll take 4 thanks.
Hopefully I'll be able to commision you on them soon, but I may go 2 x heavier rods (24kg) and 2 x lighter rods (15kg). Just not 100% sure.
