Port Denison

Gday Guys and Girls,

Haven't posted here in what seems like faaaaar too long. Between new business's, new house's and Mrs Deefa and i doing our bit to keep the population of Australia on a steady incline- there hasn't been a lot of fishing time..   :-(. Fingers crossed, thats gonna change starting next week.

Heading up to Port Denison for a long overdue family holiday next week. I'll be dusting off a whole heap of gear, packing the 4wd, and setting off for what hopefully will be a fun family break, with some (hopefully lots) of fish for me and the kids... However, having never been to Denison before, we'll kinda be flying blind.

So, any of you good fisherfolk have any tips as to where, how, what to expect etc, that ya's might wanna share?? Not looking for anyone's 'honey holes', just some general info as to beach conditions, accessability, etc etc- just some clues to help unravel fishing a new area to us... Being summer on the west coast, i'm expecting some wind.. ?

Googling 'Port Denison' & 'Dongara' hasn't turned up any help/advice of any real value, so i thought i'd ask you lot. Any help & advice will be greatly appreciated. Hoping to have some pics of happy, smiling kids holding up their 'prize' catch here on our return..

Cheers

Dan

Dont know much bout port denison but if you travel half hour up the road north theres a place called flat rocks. Seen dhuys and spaniards landed there in the past. Very reefy country.

It's a magic place! Taking wife and family is a great idea as they can stroll around and do whatever. It's a great marina. For years the fishing there has been great. The main rock wall at night and in the morning will give you heaps of options including Tailor and, dare I say, Mulloway. Lots of other species too around the marina.

As cudbefishn has suggested, some 30 kms north of Dongara is a place they call the S-Bends. If you use the search option here you will find plenty of discussion and reports from there (including mine). The southern most part of the action there starts around Flat Rocks (a very well recognised surf spot). About 10kms north is a place called Lucy's. Anywhere in between those spots is serious potential albeit you need the 4x4 and to work hard. Unfortunatly, some of the better more famous holes are on private property and can only be accessed by quad bikes etc. Never-the-less, there are some remarkable holes to fish morning and evening.

Good luck up there. I hope you and the family have a great time!

head out behind the reef (apox 5nm) and look for pots and you will clean up

but be careful if you drive your boat on the trailer I did a prop there (small ramp)

lots of info there Vince, cheers for that.. The house we're staying in is literally pissing distance from the marina, so it's good to know theres some good fishin on offer there. Although, i dunno too much about the wife & kids 'strolling around'- they're as keen on catching some fish as i am...!!! I know of s-bend/flat rock/lucys etc too thanks cudbfishin- an area i've never fished, but plan on exploring....

Thanks for the heads up on the boat scene mightymouse- only this trip will be totally land based...

you can get plenty of bread

Sun, 2010-01-10 22:19

you can get plenty of bread and butter stuff from the groin in the mornings and evenings, also seen some good pinkys taken from the end of the south groin , if you want some fun on light gear there is plenty of small pinkys inside the marina from same wall. cant help with any other beach stuff but its a great place for a holiday and just relax

sounds like we gonna be

Sun, 2010-01-10 22:33

sounds like we gonna be spending some time exploring the marina- i do love my light tackle fishing  :-D.  Plan on some night sessions too, just me and the good lady wife, and once we're done with that, we'll probably wet a line...  :-D (taking me dear on old mum along for night time baby sitting duties  :-P ). Does anyone know if 'south beach' is 4wd accessible, and whether it holds any  fish worth chasing on the big gear at night..?

Tailor Time

Mon, 2010-01-11 07:31

Plenty of 50cm tailor in the evening from the north rock wall & fishing platform last week Dan.  Get into them.  You and the kids can fish, whilst Mrs Deefa sips chardy on the beach watching the sunset only 100m from you.

You'll have a ball up there - nice place.

New business?  Service due soon...or are ya selling underwear now.

Cheers Pete

No, no- not selling them

No, no- not selling them Pete- just started wearing them  ;-)

So far theres been quite a referances to the marina, looks like i won't be travelling far at all wet a line. We're sticking very much to the K.I.S.S. theory on this holiday, so that suits us fine.

Great fishing around the town. 7 mile and 9 mile north of town will produce good tailor and mulloway this time of year. Yellowfin whiting along most of the beaches and crabs in the marina.

Wind may be a problem this time of year.
