yeah mate I was there last month and picked up a few bargains.
check out the night markets in phuket townfor some good stuff, I think they are only open on the weekends though. theres a guy who has a local shop who has a stall there and he had a pretty good range of rods, reels and all the other tackle.
also worth checking out the few of the shops also in phuket town. a few of the shops look a bit dodgy as they are just like open market style shops, but they still have all the good stuff. just google "fishing phuket town" for their addresses
the high end gear was pretty much the same price as over here though.
I got some knife jigs at the night markets...they seemed ok, but once out of the pack, i found them to be really soft metal and easily bent without much force. They came back up in weird shapes after being hit by fish, but they were cheap and I guess they are good backups if your losing heaps to Mack's etc. and you need something cheap to use.
