Painting Ally
Submitted by doublej on Sun, 2009-12-20 10:04
Just about 3/4 of the way through my project.
24ft ally which I have added a hardtop and self draining deck to.
I'm about to paint the hull. Does anyone known if you have to rub it back to bare ally or just etch the paint and feather in any scratches or dings that are already there and then give it a coat or two..
To rub it back all the way will be nightmare but if that's what is needed so be it.
Looking at painting the hull dark blue and the rest white.
All info would be apprieciated.
Cheers all and Merry Xmas.

nice little project,
nice little project, painting should be the same as respraying a car , just give it a roughen up and give it a fresh suit. if there are any parts that have bare alli showing dont forget to primer first

Soda or sand blast will cost
Soda or sand blast will cost a couple of grand.
I don't mind a bit of elbow grease if that is what it will save me.
Just after the best / right way to do it.
Cheers...

Procrastinate
He keeps saying he will do it.
But in the mean time I have to keep plodding on.
Otherwise it will be next Xmas before it's in the water.

Painting alloy
Its along time since I painted alloy surfaces, but I doubt if its changed that much. My work involved aviation, and particuarly crop dusting. Just looking at the patches of missing paint, I would be inclined to think that corrosion will have started.
Loose paint and corrosion need to be gotten rid of. I would remove all loose paint and blast those areas (patches) that show signs of corrosion, with glass bead, it doesnt damage the surface like sand or grit will.
The blasted surface will act as a good bond for the paint. The recomendation would be to use an "Etch primer" on any aluminium surface that is mirror shiny. The idea is that the etch primer does exactly what it says, acid in the primer eats the surface and provides a key for any paint to grip to.
Depending on what kind of paint job you are going to do on the hull, a good rub down, of the old paint, de-grease, then primer and undercoat etc.
If you get the surfaces blasted becarefull. High pressure and strong impact of the grit can expand the plate and cause distortion. I would be inclined to use those handyman guns.
