Slight deviation from fishing.
Is it just me ? . Is what happened in Las Vegas last night having a desensitising effect on your emotions? . Years ago an event like this would have been truely shocking , yet in today's society it seems to becoming more common place . Are we ( sadly ) reading the news and processing the information and not really absorbing the fact that the world is slowly but surely turning to shit before our own eyes? . Even more worrying, what can be done to fix this helpless situation ? .

With you mate
gee , you read my mind , me and my girls have watched a few news reports etc , and your so right , I am starting to just not feel it the same,
as say Port Arthur or Dunblaine ( Little kids) , but to a certain degree Americas more and more looking like their own worse enemy.
Saw a few yank facebook posts , and so so many are doing the old guns dont kill, people kill people line, and the god given right to bear arms blah blah blah,
none seem to be questioning the mentality of how a ordinary joe can legally buy shitloads of automatic weapons , at whats basicly hardware type stores, so we have no
hope of ever doing anything from this end.
Im no wowser, having shot guns on farms against pests and at a range , but trusting the general public with miltary type weapons, is always doomed for failure.
The America of 20 or 30 years from now is not going to be a pretty place , and as the quote goes , All great empires are not brought down from outside forces , but from within.

Scary isn't it
It's a pretty scary time to be on this planet right now, what with two loose cannons with their fingers on the button and people with full auto weapons who, for no reason that has been found go out and brass the place up then kill themselves. Why don't they just blow their own head off and leave other people to get on with their life.

I have no words for some of
I have no words for some of the social media comments some yanks have been making. As far as they're concerned it's their god given right to bear arms, yeah right to what end.
Even if a ballsy president wanted to change gun ownership laws he comes up against the all powerful gun lobby and their maniacal ideals. At least it's one thing John Howard got right after Port Arthur. Don'get me wrong I believe there's a place for guns for farmers and genuine users who hunt ferals etc but that's about it bar the millitary.

On the subject of the NRA
The National Riflemans Association is the largest voice in the gun lobby. Always referring to the 2nd Amendment ( Supposed right of the citizenry to bear arms, open to interpretation) It is just wishful thinking to believe that a massacre ofthis magnitude will have a real limiting effect on their power. It will go like this, it always goes like this.
The worst elements of the Sporting Shooters Association, are unfortunately, little better than the NRA, although it would be wrong to tar the whole association with the same brush. The the Shooters and Fishers parties also attract the same types, among some good people. So be careful about throwing your vote at them just because you are disillusioned with the major parties. The country really is better served by your voting informal, than by a protest vote.

They have an ally in Trump
he was glad to accept their support, said so publicly, now they are pushing for all it is worth. The Silencer thing--what possible lawful excuse can a civilian have for a silencer. And the mental health background checks that they want scrapped. They actually WANT obviously disturbed people to have access to firearms, because, y'now, its all about personal liberty and freedom. I am sickened when I see this sort of rhetoric intrude into Australian life, even the word "patriot" has extremely unpleasant connotations for me nowadays, because these people love the term. I see a product with the word patriot in it, in Australia, I am repulsed. I noticed some home-grown campers from Qld have that name. WTF, can we please stay Aussie. I know it may sound petty, but the worst of their culture in intrusive.
As a nation, once among the best, they are sliding. Polarisation has increased , as it has in Australia, but to a far greater extent. Their moral authority has been greatly eroded, down to a point where they are almost universally dismissed. The sympathy they had after 9/11 didn't last long, and it was their own fault. With Trump as president, people are just bypassing them, or shamelessly manipulating the orange fool because it is so easy to do. That a person of such lack of intellect and general cluelessness was elected president says it all. Lesson from this--being the owner of a small family-owned company and reality TV star does not equip you for the highest office. I hope we all survive the coming years.

Shark is correct and sarcasm
Shark is correct and sarcasm doesn't really contribute to any debate to be honest.
Silencers/suppressors do have a place outside of James Bond movies, but people who don't hunt wouldn't be expected to know that.

At the end of the day the
At the end of the day the PEOPLE themselves can choose not to have guns that is their choice, they can hand them into authorities or not buy them. They don't need a government to do that for them. Unfortuntely it is deeper than that it is a country living in fear of each other and others.
My thoughts for what they are worth, because we will wake up tommorrow with another mass shooting you can guarantee that.

Here we go.Don't blame the guns.
People WITH GUNS kill people. A lot more than people with any other kind of weapons.
and yes, this is an American scenario, unique to America. Plenty of other countries have fairly ready access to firearms, but no long and exploding history of mass shootings. We have had no mass killings since our gun control, lax as it is, was enabled.
The message to take out of all this is--America, as it now stands, is doomed. Let's not become America. Their arguments are toxic, and intractable, and I can't be bothered saying anything else on this sad subject. Out.

Quick look at mass
Quick look at mass murders/massacres is Australia:
1976-1996 = 114 gun related mass murders
1996/7= gun reform
1997-2017 = 16 gun related mass murders with 8 of those being cases of the father committing murder suicide and killing their children

Interesting article on gun ownership:
In the 1940s and 1950s, Cold War concerns about ex-military rifles falling into the hands of communist radicals led New South Wales to place restrictions on the legal ownership of rifles of a military calibre (see: .303/25) while members of rifle clubs and military rifle clubs could own ex-military rifles. In the 1970s these restrictions were relaxed in New South Wales and military style rifles (both bolt-action and semi-automatic) once again became widely available, except in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

I beg to differ
The biggest killer of people is the automobile in all its forms, cars don't kill you can say.
But people who drive them do, some are drunk, some are on drugs, some are driving at speeds beyond their capability and some have grown to old to handle the modern technologies put in cars. And some are deliberately used to run into crowds of people and kill as many as possible.
While there are humans controlling items capable of killing there fellow human beings they will kill each other by accident or design.
We are about to see two very big (repeat) changes come into being, namely our police force (god bless them all ) are going to look at taking on an American type of driving action to stop stolen vehicles, this is called the "pit move" the police vehicle causes the stolen vehicle to go into a 18 degree spin caused by the police vehicle ramming the rear of the stolen vehicle. A bit more to it than that but you get the idea.
The police are also going to have it made clear to them that they are protected by law if the use lethal force to stop "terrorist acts" (how that is defined is going to be interesting,) this will take away the waiting to see just what the piece human excrement is going to do, thus take away the advantage he/she my gain.
These changes may or may not be good, time and experience will tell
In both cases it is highly possible fatalities will occur, one by the use of a vehicle the other by a firearm.
A question to ponder over, how do we stop people from killing each other be it by intent or accident.

I beg to differ too. Suicide is a far bigger killer than car accidents. Mental health is surely the real issue here.

Not sure of exact figures,
Medical mistakes kill quite a few in Australia, but lets not ban doctors. Tried to google it, can get deaths due to most things, but not due to medical mistakes.

Yeah I end just seeing red too , and just cant be bothered talking to illogical people anymore either.
Its a simple unarguable fact , that in this latest case , this maniac simply coulndnt have killed all those people so easely without almost
unfetted access to military stye guns, in huge numbers , as many as he wanted and had no reason to own.
You simply never know what people are thinking , as can be seen by his brothers response, and in all these cases people close to these nutters almost always
seem shocked by the acts committed.
So if those nearest and dearest , those who see these people at there most relaxed , there most trueful, cant pick one bad apple out from the rest , how the hell do the
gun shop owners or sellers or police? ( in the U.S).
I am happy and extremely grateful to live in a amazingly quiet and peaceful Perth, and any unlimited gun ownership advocates can bugger off to some hell hole
like Mexico or south central L.A , if unlimited guns bring them such joy.

Frosty where the fuck did that info come from and if you wouldn't mind posting the link i'd be very interested to have a read because i'm calling BS...
The SKS that old Martin used in Tassi was an illegal firearm, this topic shits me no end....
For those that don't like to hear it i'll say it just for you, GUNS DONT KILL PEOPLE PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE....
Ranmar, how many fishing rods do you have?
I have say 15, I have 3 sets of golf clubs BUT I also have 5 rifles and a shotgun....
Am i now more dangerous than thy neighbour that has only the 1 rifle?
Its a fucking load of bollocks and the last thing you would want to do in the US now is to make irrational decisions regarding rule changes. There are 400 million registered firearms in the USA and you wouldn't want to see them go down the road we went down where the rule changes affect responsible gun owners like what dickhead Howard did in Australia...
Are you same fellas that are anti gun going to also be anti Hiace Van when the numbers in London keep adding up because you can be sure the next roadside mass hit n run won't be too far away...
You will never stop the extremists, that is a sad fact of the modern era, dont let the fear mongering today tonight styles emotional reporting sway your views and also dont use America as some sort of "benchmark" as they are a fucked up country. We should distance ourselves from the US like the Kiwis have done but instead we seem to be trying to become them as fast as possible.

One of the stupider
One of the stupider proposals that seems to be gaining traction is for all club shooters to store their firearms at the club and not at home.
Think about it, hundreds of firearms, handguns, longarms and shotguns stored in an empty building all week...
Some of the people driving these agendas are not real smart.
In the case of my club it is in a rural area 50km from town and maybe 10km to the closest house and out of sight.

We dont base our firearm
We dont base our firearm regulations in this country around what happens in Honduras or Venezuala so i'm fucked if i know why we should look at basing what happens here with a country like America...
America is waaay too far gone for many reasons, we'd be better off tuning right out of what happens over there....
I agree Rob, some of the paranoia around is ridiculous, some of the jokers that get air time trying to spread the anti gun message is pathetic, I say stick to the facts and dont introduce laws that penalise the already law abiding citizen.
With drone tech rapidly progressing i think we have much much bigger issues facing our safety and security ...
I wonder how long it will be until we see drones used to drop explosives into an event like the AFL GF? GPS coordinates, several drones could cause mayhem and the perpetrators could be on a plane heading home never to be seen again before the death count is even complete....

Have a look at the slidefire site
From what I read the bump stock is perfectly legal and they are having trouble keeping up with orders.
There are some very smart design people out there with the way the system works and they also have a mod that allows your M15/16 to adapt to being belt fed with disintegrating links.
I must confess that I have never come across anything that thick that I have needed heavy auto fire to subdue.
I can only guess that I must have lived a sheltered life.
