not often I'm gobsmacked, crab bait

went down to the local bait shop for some tuna heads ,only had big box's so I said I'd use chicken necks and lamb offcuts, seeing its nearly aust.day, he reakons you can't use any animal product, like spleen lamb or chicken pieces for the same reason they banned hocks for cray bait?????? anyone heard this

What carnarvonite said, no hair or feathers. The shop owner was probably being genuine, but maybe didn't explain it fully.

Cats

Cats are no good in craypots, they scratch your hands while trying to close the bait box lids.

Mon, 2014-01-20 18:26

just did some research and the use of non fish based products for crab bait actually is illegal in South Australia. but nowhere on the entire WA fisheries website does it say anything about legal or illegal bait so theres no way its the case here.

Mon, 2014-01-20 22:18

The guys a dikwad just like the guy in big blue tacklestore in clarkson that told me he had the big crab nets only to find when I drove all the way up there same day he had sold out previously!

I guess he thought hed get me to buy some other stuff since I was in his shop....he was wrong.

Buying all my stuff online now. No loyalty to local retail if you behave like that. Wake up shop owners! Customer service perpetuates return business.

the rules..

Tue, 2014-01-21 07:52

I emailed the fisheries dept a few months ago to ask exactly what the rules were on berley. This is what they said:

"Thank you for your enquiry regarding the use of berley.

You cannot use berley in Marine Conservation areas (eg Cottesloe).

When fishing in Cottesloe Fish Habitat Protection Areas, releasing blood or offal is prohibited. You may not fish using any bovine material (other than gelatine or tallow), any skin or hide, anything to which any mammal skin or hide is attached, or any lobster material.

Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

Regards

Angela Evans
Licensing Officer
3rd Floor, The Atrium,
168 St Georges Terrace
Perth 6000
Ph. 94827282"

No bovine = no cows. Chicken necks/heads ok so long as you skin them.

Cheers,

Smez

Interesting!!

Tue, 2014-01-21 15:40

Last weekend the local supermarket had no chicken necks or lamb necks -- Flacon in mandurah so sold out. Thought oh well, I have enough, but what if a sting ray pinches a few baits. Bought a bag of beef offcuts as a reserve.

Didnt have to use it but it was on the boat.

Wont now, and the dogs are in for a treat!!

You can use anything for crab bait

Tue, 2014-01-21 19:03

I once had a email from the fisheries stating you can use any animal part including rabbits roo tail cow hock all with hair on them. Crays have different regs.

Their is no regulation stating you can't..... end of debate

awful day

Wed, 2014-01-22 13:25

only 2 size crabs, crabbers everywhere in the swan near the narrows ,most struck out from what we could see, standing on my lawn[hillarys] waiting to get picked up for a change, saw a parachute flare out over the ocean, reported it about 4.35 am
