No 27meg coverage in Walpole
Submitted by maldugs on Tue, 2017-03-14 10:57
Hi just recently returned from Walpole, rang up the VMR Walploe, told them I had a 27 meg marine radio, and they told me that they only monitor VHF radio now, so if you get in trouble on the Inlet, I guess it's Mobile phone or attract another boats attention, all the VMR stations here in Perth monitor 27meg, always have felt safe with being tuned to 88, but it looks like I may have to switch over to VHF.

Metro Area
All the rescue groups in the metro area monitor both VHF and 27mhz. You will find that most of the country groups only monitor VHF given the distances people can travel in these areas. I don't agree with it and intend raising it with our association which covers all groups in the state as not everyone has a VHF.

27meg
If your fishing the south coast get a vhf. The 27meg is unreliable in the topography and there may not be enough boats around to rely on being able to contact someone close by.

I normally only fish in the inlet, but accidents can happen even in closed waters, it can get pretty rough at times in the inlet, maybe if I go there again, will buy a VHF.

We all know that VHF is a far better choice, but 27mhz is still a valid option. A VMR choosing not to monitor it while it is still a recreational marine safety frequency will only lead to a tragedy one day.
I see both the VMR association and DOT are still listing Walpole VMR as monitoring CH88 27mhz.

I mentioned that but they said they were trying to get DOT to change it, I ran the VMR VN6DI radio towere for three years, and monitored all frequencies, you only have to listen, it is not hard, most of the boaties in the caravan park only had 27mhz.

Both
If you have the room, I reckon it is a good idea to carry both.
Always good to have a backup if one unit either has no coverage or fails to operate.
In the scheme of things VHF or 27meg radios are really not that expensive.

North West
Same goes for sea rescue groups up north, most do not monitor 27meg any more due to the low numbers of people using it and the difficulties with it. VHF is the go
