G,day all, just got news today that my 1999 200hp Merc Optimax has developed a significant rattle in the powerhead, have been considering a new E-tec or Suzuki 225. I,m after anyones opinion on re-powering or re-building and any extra costs or dramas people may have had with re-builds.

Re-power
The reason I would repower is, once you have paid for a full rebuild, the motor will only be worth or maybe even less than the cost of the rebuild. Re-powering you will possibly need a new hydraulic ram to suit the new brand motor.
On the flip side, depends how big a fix on the 200hp, total rebuild or fix what is broken - can't really tell until it is stripped
New motor will be quieter, more economical, reliable and won't smell

depends
Depends , like wangler said what is actually required and weather your ever gunna decide to sell your motor seperate after the rebuild. I was unfortunate not long ago to end up with a heap of water in my tank basically destroying all interals in the head incl fuel pump ext. Luckily for me insurance came to the party. basically every part inside the power head was replaced, the motor is now quietier and feels better than it ever did ( 2004 yamaha 150 800hrs
