new rules

just wondering if some one can help with the new rules. what are rhe current rules?

are the rules in now or are they still under review?

i was under the impression that snapper and jewy fishing was only banned in the sound from oct-dec, but have since found out it is a total ban?

so i am going fishing on sunday and if i catch a sized jewy-snapper from 60 mtrs and have to release it, to see it float away and get eaten by birds ( i dont think so). what are you supposed to do.

should i park my boat up till dec (i dont think so)

i understand that the stocks are getting lower and lower, but to stop fishing all together for this time is f****ED.

why couldnt they just reduce the limit to 1 per person or per boat or increase the size?

u cant target them. so dont even go out into those waters with rigs for them or u can get fined for fishing for them.. u can still go for sambos, kgw, squid, mulloway, tailor and those sort of fish but there is 21 fish u are not alowed to catch or target.. if u go that deep then take a realse weight or 2 just for safety

The charter operator that was out last Sunday with 20 odd blokes, all with Alvey's and patternosta rigs, didn't seem too worried about high risk species floating off...

I thought they were gonna target species other than the high risk species, not fish in a location that is thick with undersize/small pinkies, that from 200m are cactus once raised.

Fisho-ron sounds like you

Fisho-ron sounds like you have made your mind up you will fish and if you catch you will keep,i do hope this is not the case. You need to read up on the new rules as from your post you have not got a clue ,you are not allowed to target most demersal fish catch and release is not allowed ,if you are a keen fisho then you will do the wright thing and target sambos and other none demersals, also the bag limit for dhuies has been droped to one per fisho or two per boat.and if you do chose to do go out fishing and bring in your fish i do hope you get caught.

i will not be taking or targeting the banned fish, i was trying to say, that when i go out and target say sambo?(i call this fishing not targeting) i use the same deep sea rig for everything. what happens if i pull up a snapper, go to put  it back and it dies.

i have pulled fish in from 30 metres and released them to see them float away.

as for paul g, i have never taken undersized or more than my allowed bag limit and i wont be starting now, but i am not going to stop fishing.

but you cant say we are  going out fishing and i will not catch the banned fish, who knows what comes up on the line?

When you do hook a fish, go slow on the retrieve to the surface.  This will give the 'bycatch' a better chance to de gas.  Even stop the retrieve for 30 seconds a couple of times on the way up.

You should have a release weight at the ready aswell to then return the 'banned fish' back to the bottom as soon as possible.

Cheers

Stupidity

Fri, 2009-10-23 08:23

Are charter boat operators exempt from using release weights to return unwanted fish or are the fools who operate this particular boat that Bones76 has mentioned just completely stupid or don't give a dam about the fish stocks. I suppose after taking the money from their clients it is, "we don't give a shit", we are miles out to sea and the fisheries are nowhere to be seen. The main reason for the new fishing rules being a little over the top is because of these fools, greedy bastards, cowboys, dickheads or what ever other words you would like to call these people.
No one likes the new rule very much, but if we don't all follow them they will only get worse, wake up dick-heads and do the right thing and we will have fish for a whole heap longer.

Not sure which charter you mean but

Fri, 2009-10-23 17:51

I went out with Mills the other week when Southern cross cancelled and they used release weights at every opportunity.

Also I had never been out on mills before as I had heard alot of rubbish reports on them but It was an enjoyable day out. New skipper ex cray fisherman and brand new to charters -, and used a swag of his ex cray spots to try and find the fish and a good friendly decky, enough ice etc etc.

Anyway it was quite a bit better than another Hillarys based charter ive been on. :)

Its not that hard mate, dont even bother going out and targeting any bottom fish until December 16. The rules are pretty straight forward and I cant believe the number of poeple who dont know what they are or are arrogent enough to think they dont apply to them in person . . .

Nannys and cod are on the list as well catchalittle, sorry.

The rules are   http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/pub/RecFishArrange/new%20rules%20at%20a%20glance.pdf

The ruling basically

Fri, 2009-10-23 09:16

The ruling basically means... no bottom bouncing for demersal fish. Why bother? Why can't people just accept it and move on, time wasted trying to dispute the ruling would be better spent researching and trying new forms of fishing, and looking for different species. I guess i'm trying to say (just generally,ie. to no one in particular) stop complaining and try something different.

Adapt and enjoy

Fri, 2009-10-23 09:50

I'm afraid in my opinion, bottom bouncing for anything other than small fry (whiting etc well away from structure) is really thumbing your nose at the rules and everyone else who abides by them. Surely its better to just avoid that activity / area altogether for a couple of months and use the time to broaden your fishing spots, skills and species list where the likelihood of encountering a banned species is minimised.

Nothing wrong with hitting the sambo's as you suggest but use jigs to limit bycatch and dont fish the jigs right on the bottom.

As Paul says go slow and use a release weight if by chance you encounter something you're not supposed to.

Nobody is stopping us from going fishing, just look at it as a refreshing change for three or four trips. Because that's probably all it will impact given weather, work and social commitments leading up to xmas.

Fri, 2009-10-23 09:51

Were checking Ground and catch out from Hillarys last Saturday,I was on a boat they checked, had we been on good ground,Coral, reef, ect I think they may have been more attentive,we were on sand, got into marina and two Fisheries were checking boats and catch, well done to the department (a very rear ackalaide from me),I also saw them checking boats in the Northern part of Couckbourn sound last Wednesday,I hope we rec people do the right thing so that we can then roundly criticize those who dont, but I think Paul G was just trying to advise every one to be aware.jersey

Fisho -joe if you go back

Fri, 2009-10-23 15:36

Fisho -joe if you go back and read your post you say if i catch a sized jewy-snapper from 60 mtrs and have to release it, to see it float away and get eaten by birds ( i dont think so). what are you supposed to do. im reading this as you won't through it away you'll keep it this is the way it reads.you go on to say why couldnt they just reduce the limit to 1 per person or per boat or increase the size? this shows you do not now the new rules so you do need to read up before you go out ,i have checked my post and i can't see where i said you would take undersized fish. i think you need to word your posts a little bit better so people don't get the wrong idea.also might be a good idea to get a release weight as they are good for getting the fish back to the bottom im told.

we are just staying

Fri, 2009-10-23 17:06

in Cockburn Sound and fishing for whiting, squid etc, if we go back up to Leeman (before ban is over) we won't be taking the boat till after the new year.

My big gripe is the professionals can fish in the ban and fish when its supposed to be the breeding time for the species banned that really gets up my nose.  One out all out as far as I'm concerned, fair for everybody and most important for the fish breeding.

would fully support a similar ban in the north coast bio region, a 2 month closure on red emperor, blue-line/spangled emperor, rankin cod, coral trout, scarlet sea perch would be great IMO.

Cockburn Sound

Sat, 2009-10-24 11:03

needs a lot of changes to keep it alive for the future generation. Professsional Fisherman certainly need to be bought back by the government . Cockburn Cement needs to stop also, they have done that much damage there and they can still get away with dredging after how many years...30 to 40? Remove the causeway to Garden Island, and watch it become alive again. Such a shame, I was once told by a old friend that it used to be one of the richest nurseries in Aussie, I believe it would have been.......
