New Outboard

I have a 20 foot Voyager Ghia that i bought 12 months ago and i am saving for a new replacemnt outboard. It has an Ocean Pro Evenrude 1998 model that is runnig fine but just want a new motor. The boat is in amazing condition including a brand new professionally built  transom as the old one was rotted out. The sticker on the boat with the horsepower rating is obscured but have seen these boats or similar with 200 HP plus. I am thinking of upgrading to at least 150 HP or more but want the lightest possible engine. I must admit i really like the two stroke Evenrude and was wondering if anyone out there has one of these boats with a bigger motor and could give any advise or suggestions for the new motor.

Thanks for any help much appreciated.

I can't answer your questions

I can't answer your questions regarding the size of motor of that hull, but I am a big fan of the Mercury 150 4 Stroke. 3L torquey displacement & 19KG's lighter than the current E-TEC 150. People are also picking them up for $17-18.5k fitted depending on gauges/spec! To go to a 200HP of any brand is probably going to add $10k to that!

If you look at 10year old boats today, Those with 4 stroke motors tend to pickup a 15-25% premium. Thats where my money would go...

No fan of Merc in general

No fan of Merc in general but have to agree-150 has few negative reports that I have seen.
Etec-there are strong opinions on them, mostly uninformed but unfortunately more people shy away from buying a used boat with one than are attracted to them.
Hence the comment by Darren...

My brother has the 150 4 stroke Merc, he loves it and has racked up a shitload of hours in 2yrs.

Having owned an etec 2 banger, all I can say is don't waste your hard earned cash, they also have next to little resale value.

Etec

don’t think his comments about 2stroke Evenrude relate to buying an etec, I think he’s saying he likes his old motor !

The best was 1983 Yamaha 175 hP whisper quite on a 5.2 Fraser. 50 plus knots in Cockburne Sound iwould give my right hand for one of therm. Went ot Rotto a few times it was a long time ago but 15 mins to Philip Rock.
