My Rookie Mistake
Well after been away from home for 7 weeks due to work and weddings in Perth, I finally got back to Broome and keen to wet a line with all the good reports of decent barra numbers being caught.
Packed the boat up, mate came round and we were off to the creek. Thought there hadnt been rain around so took a short cut accross a section of flats and me saying "yep been through here before when it wet and its not pretty" only to met by wet slippery clay..... 20meters in and all four tyres covered in it and car was now just spinning on the spot.... Abit of manouvering back and forwards but it was like driving on ice.... Yep, stuck.. damn. Luckily it was just the surface that was wet and we didnt sink too much so unhooked the trailer, managed to get the car out onto the dry stuff 50m ahead, then had to use the anchor rope to pull the boat out of its hole... Anchor rope broke as the trailer was sitting quite deep in it now too... A quick new knot was tied and we were out... Sweet. Not too much of a drama really. Only wasted 45 mins or so....
Boat in the water and the first troll was underway, talking about how much worse the day could get already my mate has reached into the esky to get a drink only for me ask if he could could pass my BANANA to me.....
As soon as I said that I knew I had buggered up.... Seriously... My mate couldnt beleive it looking at me with a look of wanting to throw me off my own boat...
I couldnt beleive I would do such a thing as Im a big believer of NO BANANAs on the boat after a few experiences down Perth way a few years back... So all in all I caught bugger all, And my mate 1 small MJack for a long day on the water...
So has anyone else made a rookie mistake like this that your mates are never going to let you forget too?
Cheers
Mark.

Why no bananas?When i was
Why no bananas?
When i was younger, i was holding on to the boat at the ramp while dad parked the car, and i forgot to put the plugs in. So i jumped into the water with my trackies and jacket and stuck my finger in the plug hole. It hurt a big but it was worth it. Lucky it was only the dinghy!

Bananas in Boats
Yeah, a mate of mine from Kununurra told me about the Bananas in Boats thing a few years ago. Back in the day when goods were transported by boat, (wooden boats that is) there was an issue of some wood boaring bug I'm sure someone on here will know the exact name) that would hitch a ride with the bananas, then while at sea boar holes in the wooden hulls of the boats and they would sink.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but thats the story I was told. But yeah, thats why.
However it's only as deep as your beliefs.
I reckon you've done well Mark. Could've been alot worse.

History
My understanding is that the reason bananas are bad luck on a boat stems from early ocean crossings (ie explorer days) where the gas given off from ripening bananas spoiled the remaining food stores - hence they got banned.

Bananas again
Take one out everytime you go fishing, and you will soon realize its crap. Its as bad as that stupid show on TV about the best Psychic. Blah. Banana is great bait for gardies with a small hook, the dont suck on it like they do with most baits, but wolf it down.
Bananas welcome on my boat.
Also because of the high potassium content excellent mixed in Berley. We all have superstitions (mine was when I played rugby I would only ever wear a certain pair off undies. After a few seasons they were ragged, but still wore them) but I have tested the banana theory and it is not true. Some stella(r) days with bananas on board.

Yea everyone has there little
Yea everyone has there little superstiitions and for me its been bananas... In the boat down in Perth we never did any good when a banana was slipped into the esky and still to this day whenever a visitor packs one into their lunch we still catch nothing. Call it coincidence or old folk law, im not a fan of bananas in boats....

only reason for me not catching fish is not the bananas, it that I'm a cr@p fisherman lol.

atleast you still managed to get out for the day when me and dad were in karratha we went looking for a river that the locals said " you will have no trouble getting there just cut accross" we still proceeded with caution and it all looked dry ON THE TOP. although it doensnt look like it we didn't keep spinning the wheels it just literally sunk hahaha.
had another car try pull us out to no success ended up having to call a tow truck 150 dollars later ahaha.
3 days later we were trapped in carnarvon due to the floods

2nd time
Got bogged for the second time in 40 odd years of driving that needed towing out. Went to drop the boat in the river at Dwyer's leap, backed back, undid the chain and winch cable then went to reverse back another couple of metres and down it went. Straight through the sandy surface and in to the stinking black mud underneath. Dropped the boat trailer off and the tyre pressures right down and tried to inch it out. No good so on the phone and rang a mate to give us a tow.By the time I'd stretched the anchor rope out and halved it twice as a four strand tow rope [snatch strap wasn't long enough] he was there.
Three attempts later the car was out and a couple more to get the trailer with boat still on it out and it was all over.
While I was re arrranging the anchor rope I dropped a few nets in and finished up with three big muddies to show for a half hours effort and a life time of nagging from the missus and friend.

hmmmmmm... you didnt have any banana's stowed away when we went out chasing mackies did ya marky? haha
Plenty of rookie mistakes have been made on my behalf, like leaving a few thousand bucks worth of gear in the carpark and just realising when when launching the boat.. haha. Shit happens i spose! One of my dickhead mates made a rookie mistake the other day by putting my rod in the rod holder incorrectly (had the graphite resting on the steel), rod loaded up.... SNAP!! Idiot!!
Hope your well matey!
