You might want to be careful with bushmans and plastic sunglasses frames. Did a brand new pair of pollys with it. Melted the paint and one of the arms snapped off, just taking them off my head.

Roll on aeroguard for me, any strength..

Stinging

Wed, 2009-01-28 21:26

You know the old bushman's stuff is pretty strong when the lotion burns your skin on application!

Bushmans aerosol is a lot milder but still very effective, especially on mozzies and sandflies.

Yep Col, I've tried them and they stop your arm getting bitten, The guys up the Territory (the land of the giant mossie) are using, and reporting, with great success these ThermaCELL units, most use 2 units (1 at each end of the boat). If I'm sleeping in a creek I use the Bushman Plus in the tube, hich lasts for about 8 hours and use OFF Skintastic when just fishing.

yeh!

Thu, 2009-01-29 09:23

I do agree that Bushmans or any repellent with strong "deet" can etch into some plastics but after travelling and fishing in bad mozzie & sandfly area's i wont use anything else. I've tried the mild stuff/less deet etc and they the insects bathed in it so for me i go Bushmans....aerosol that is!

We have a new natural cream

Thu, 2009-01-29 09:43

that works very well & Ill be bringing heaps over ( Capel is supposed to be bad). The creams got rosemary & cedarwood oils in it.
Heard that the mouthwash LISTERENE works as a spray!

Also we are just about at the 2 million dead fly mark for this summer with VEGEMITE mixed into hot water till its "consomme" then poured into one of those large clear water containers/ dispenser jars after a couple of slits are hacked horisontally about 3/4 up. The piece left between the saw cuts should be pulled out with pliers & cut off.
It takes a few days for the bait to start working but the more flies that go in and drown the more you get because the sex pheromones that they emit to attract each other make the trap irresistable to them.
As the trap fills up just add enough water to keep wet.
Works well on bushflies, houseflies, blowies & the green backed sheep blowing flies.
Put in partial shade near pets kennel , chook sheds, compost or anywhere sheltered from wind.
yeah it gets a bit on the nose but saves yer waving your friggin arms around & kills MILLIONS of the little shits!!

I`d rather be fishin`!!!

Bushmans for sure

Thu, 2009-01-29 09:58

For some reason sandflies just like me. Probably taking their piss out on me! LOL. If I go 5 minutes near mangroves I am stuffed and itch for a week. Have to self medicate with high dose steroids to stop it. The only thing that work is Bushmans, green aero for simple fishing, low risk (ie near not in mangroves), red aero for high risk and the 80% cream as daisy said for prolonged periods. DEET is toxic but so is the treatment for nasty bites.  Hope this helps because I am sick of seeing nasty midgy, sandfly and mozzie complications.

Highly recommend "Gone" mossie arm and leg bands

Fri, 2009-01-30 05:45

Made right here in WA (Ocean Reef)

was given a few samples (available at chemists I think) to use.

they worked great on mossies....not sure about pissing sand flies, and can be reused if you put them back in the sealed bag.

HIGHLY recommended for kids as DEET is nasty stuff....

PGA tour recommends them

Hi Ya,

I know this isn't a repellant response, but once you get bitten by an insect, use roll on deoderant on the bite but it has to be a roll on with the aluminium based product in it.  Usually Aluminium Chlorohydrate I think.  The sting will go almost immediately.  Our previous family doctor told me about it.  Whn the kids were small one stood on a bee.  Used the roll on and the sting went real quick.  tried in on myself on a bull ant bite.  Pain gone in seconds.  We keep a roll on in the glove box of the car at all times.

Cheers.

Good tip there Ody, I'll hafta give it a go, the "Gone" armbands are the ones I tried and they'll kepp the sandies away from the immediate area ie arm or leg but not elsewhere, I didn't notice what was the active constituent in them.
Just googled it and it's mainly peppermint oil, very effective on mossies, not so good on sandflys in my experience.

Ody, does that help remove

Sat, 2009-01-31 11:10

Ody, does that help remove the itchiness from the mozzie bites too if you roll on right after you feel the sting on the spot?

Was using Aeroguard spray last night. Question is, do you spray on every single spot? What me and my friend noticed was that, we sprayed nearly 95% of the exposed part, but guess what, the mozzies attacked the fingers that were exposed. (Even those the hand area right before the fingers were sprayed on) So I'm just wondering if with Bushman, any close proximity will discourage the mozzies from coming near at all?

Hi Ya,

"Ody, does that help remove the itchiness from the mozzie bites too if you roll on right after you feel the sting on the spot?"

To be quite honest I can't remember so asked the misus and she said yes.  Apparently, we found out about it because our daughter used to have a major reaction to mozzie bites and it was in that context the doctor told us abou it.  With bites generally though you have to apply it reasonably soon after the bite.

Just as a matter of interest, the quack also told us that the 'major reaction' was her histamines (they cause the blood vessles to contract) working overtime to counteract the anticoagulants injected by the mozzie.

Cheers.

Thanks will give that a try.

Thanks will give that a try. It just gets annoying when some mozzies bites on the arm cause the arm to swell to almost double its size literally.

Hi Ya,

That's some reaction!!  I suppose the best is to try it and find out.  I now from exeperience it works on major stings, but have to rely on the missus about the mozzie.

Cheers.

Why is it??

Tue, 2009-02-10 19:19

If there is a mozzie in the bedroom it always goes for me not the missus. She never gets bitten yet she is a natural blonde with freckles & sunburns very easily while I tan instead. When she got stung by bullants she did the indian war dance for a while but then no reaction while I blow up with blisters all round the area & a monster itch that lasts over a week!
i will certainly give the deoderant a go. Thanks ody!

I`d rather be fishin`!!!
