metro mack updating log thread

how does everyone think about this thread, good way to help newbys and those chasing their first mack, don't have to give way favourite spots etc be intereasting to see what the catch rate is per hour,I'll kick it off, my secret spot is Mindarie behind the 3 mile,so far 13 hours for 5 fish which is 1 fish just under every 2 hours

18-30m water near a drop ofof

Sun, 2012-02-26 17:23

18-30m water near a drop ofof atleast 2-5m, troll at 6-8 knots with a deep with with flashyness on it ( chrome pink, king brown bontio etc) rapalas do well for this as they go 8m. sebiles deep divers  (44ft) are very good too. flashers will incrase ur chances and seeting a berely trail in your trolling area will also increase ur chances. time on water=fish. west end does well. back of covs on the drop of does well too. always have wire atleast 3 feet. ( if another mack hits the front of the lure bam goes the lure) try use as little swivels snaps etc. just makes a bubble trail that macks will hit and also some times destroys the lures motion. btw sharks love shiney things more then macks do :)

4 hours yesterday on 3 mile on spots that have produced every trip in past month for nada.We even resorted to a anchor and burley with a shedload of old mackie frames for nothing. We did have a rather large shark hookup on dusk however which ended predictably.

Yep, ive put in 9 hours in the last few weeks trolling for mackies on the 3mile between ocean reef and mindarie for 0 mack's so far. As uncle said, theres no bait out there and the water temp has droped a little. Alot of weed out there too, almost constantly clearing the lines at times. Theres a few small bonito out there though, so a lure to match those colours might increase the chances ;)

Just of rotto

Wed, 2012-03-07 07:36

 Hey guys

I have done plenty of trolling up north(exy) for mackies but never tried here. Well we went out on the weekend on Sunday and got a double run of Mack's just of Parker pt near rotto. 25m. Smallest was 1.1m he took a 2m gold 160 laser, the other tool a 2m 190 king brown. We gave the single strand wire a shot as we heard this is harder to see, or the equivalent of fluorocarbon for wire. Seemed to do the trick. The guys at Campbell's make them up an are pretty cheap. We were also running a couple of teasers and a few lines. We got those around 930 after trolling for half hour. Trolled the rest of the day for nothing though. We saw boats with mackies on around us too so must be in the area. Goodluck

2 hrs trolling west end

Sun, 2012-03-18 18:48

2 hrs trolling west end yesterday afternoon for nothing....word was the mackies fired there first up early on in the morning... today and yesterday. Mind you we found a patch of bait getting worked yesterday between garden island and rotto, which resulted in one small mack species, and a couple other hooks up.

7.5 hrs trolling the threemile for 2 hooks ups one solid, which we lost around a cray pot,,,,other strike didnt stick after the first run. No bait at all on the three mile, trolled ocean reef to two rocks saw lil smudges here or there on the sounder. No tuna nothing just another day of bad luck with fish! still weather was glorious this morning

Trolled for two and half

Sun, 2012-03-18 21:58

Trolled for two and half hours out from Mindarie through to Hillarys. Water depth of 27m-24m for approx. 5 smallish schools of tuna (longtail suspected) in between. Landed 2 one on a 160 DD 7m+ red head and one on a 190 crazy deep gold with brown back (I think it is called a king mack). Used 60lb single strand wire and found that the schools were generally piss farting around and not really feeding properly. Having said that I did find a few patches of large amounts of bait fish but mainly on the bottom.

Cheers OX

What makes me laugh is the fact that a lot of people

Mon, 2012-03-19 06:17

have spent a lot of time trolling seeing very few bait schools(More some days than others and only in the last couple of weeks) Yet tackle stores get complaints that there was a small amount of time that there was no mulies in stock. Some fishos must think the bait catching crews and tackle stores have Harry Potter working for them.

Had a small spaniard jumpin

Sun, 2012-03-25 19:03

Had a small spaniard jumpin outa the water 3 or 4 times tryn to hit a small popper (water wasnt that clear and the lure had only one w hook) when I was trolling for tailor along the beach around pipadinny on sat, couldnt believe I missd the hook up would have been gd fun on light gear. Water was 22.something

2 hours out of Hillarys today

Mon, 2012-03-26 08:23

2 hours out of Hillarys today for zip.

Water temp 22.9 - 23.4 @ 3-mile.

Saw sweet FA for an hour, then thought I'd go and try my luck jigging when (within a minute of leaving 3 mile) I drove straight through a 80 diameter bust-up which we stalked for over 40mins.

Constant simmer, with intermittent bust-ups & boils -

Birds would move in and they'd pop up simmering 50m away or so.

Trolled past it, through it plenty of times and got zip.............

Then parked next to it casting red-heads, twistys, X-Raps etc over the far side and even right into the guts of it ............ and got zip.

Oh well, boat had a nice spa - and my boy loved the action.

Wish I took a screen shot, it was f-ing massive, and there were some big arches underneath.

I left thinking "F#ck me - if I didn't get one then, I'm never going to !"

Crunts of things !

Then on our way out past rotto had a bird dive right in front of the boat, stopped, spun around and sounded a narrow plume of bait extending solid from 5m to the bottom @ 35m.

No arches, and no surface activity (other than the 1 bird) - so was hard to track and eventually lost it.

Temp 23.5C out there.

Should have stuck to bottom bouncing.

Had one of my Overhead rig's reel shit itself after the first hour too (2nd hand Sealine - never again), so had to make do trolling the shallower lures with a PE6-8 Demon blood Spin rig - which got a ridiculous wobble / shimmy happening.

trolled 3 mile for a couple

Mon, 2012-03-26 08:46

trolled 3 mile for a couple of hours in the tinnie for two chunks of weed. saw a few arches on the sounder but no joy. didn't see any bait or birds at all. then went and had a bottom bash which was entertaining with pretty much a fish a drop, but pretty unproductive quality wise, although we did end up with some good skippy and a blackarse.

other notable points from the day were - the unguarded trinided and g-loomis rod that hooked a sufficiently sized fish to take it over the side in 15m, the trailer jockey wheel handle that sheared itself off on a lump in the driveway, and the esky lid that mysteriously vanished on the trip back...(p.s. my old man was responsible for all 3 of those cock-ups)

Lean year

Wed, 2012-03-28 18:33

Lots of hours for no fish this year. Had a school of big Mack's swimming around our sea anchor while we were jigging for dhuies. After a panicked change of outfits they had vanished and no trolling could bring them up. About 18kms off Two Rocks. Spent time at usual haunts around Rotto and no luck - no signs if anything on other boats. Water temp low compared to last season, more weed, no baitfish but will try again this weekend!
