Med Spinning Outfit

Looking at buying an outfit for spinning with 15-20lb braid. Will hopefully get amongst some tuna and mackies using metals and stickbaits so want a rod that can throw up to 30-40g maybe but also want to be able to use it for soft plastics offshore on some reefies. One that has caught my eye is the Nitro Distance Spin Magg Butt, is their anything that can compare? Want to match it with either a 4000-5000 Shimano or 3000-4000 Daiwa with a smooth, strong drag that will stand up to big fish. Budget of around $350 for the reel and $300 for the rod. Looking for quality. What are my options?

Any help would be terrific

Seconded on the T-curves

Seconded on the T-curves (though, I dont like how the heavier models dont continue the cork around the back of the reel like the lighter ones do, but depends how you hold it).

Have a look at the daiwa saltwaters. Quite nice rods and pretty light.

I think zxoga may do a rod like that too?

And a big plus to the sol 4000 Laughing. My sol (but a tiny 2000) is probably my favourite reel.

Viper would be a step up eh?

Fri, 2008-12-12 15:13

Thnx to everyone so far.

Viper would be a step up from the Magnum Butt eh? Can anybody suggest something on par with the Magg Butt? Will look at the Viper for heavier spinning applications further down the track.

and.. has anybody had the chance to compare the new Daiwa Heartland with the Sol? suppose to be the same, or better.

If you want to run 15-20lb

Fri, 2008-12-12 15:12

If you want to run 15-20lb with that size reel, the Viper is heaps better suited than MagnumButt IMO

Heartland = 1 extra bearing, and all CRBB compared to some stainless and some CRBB in Sol.

I picked up a Heartland recently WODF

Fri, 2008-12-12 15:16

It has to be one of the smoothest eggbeaters I have ever used. I am extremely impressed.
It is rated slightly higher than the SOL by Daiwa, and the SOL is a fantastic reel, so that tells you something.

A 3000 wodf

Mate, it sounds strange, but I can't remember what brand braid it was. I was too busy chatting to the guys at the Tackle Shack when I said yes to whatever Mako suggested. I know it was 10 lb though and it is very nice.

No worries mate. Just for

Fri, 2008-12-12 15:33

No worries mate. Just for the 30-40 gram slices etc the viper would cast heaps better imo, Doesn't have such a soft tip and will handle the runs of tuna better.

I have used it on my xzoga spin rod and even on my Moonraker

Fri, 2008-12-12 15:42

I mainly bought it to go with the 9 foot xzoga. But it worked really well on my 13 foot 8 Moonraker, so I will probaly use it on both.
They cast really well WODF and have plenty of grunt for such a smooth reel, so for throwing slices, etc. I think they would be ideal.

This outfit i plan on buying

Fri, 2008-12-12 15:47

This outfit i plan on buying will hopefully stand up to fish to 15-20kg with a bit of effort. Mainly tuna and macks. The reel is going to be spooled with 15lb Tuff Line.

Can't wait Smile

Looking forward to hearing some more replies and maybe some more options to have a think about.

Thnx in advance

The new Twinpowers are really nice WODF

Fri, 2008-12-12 15:54

Not cheap, but they have a lot of the Stella gear inside them. I had a look at a couple in Sydney recently. My only issue is the smallish handle.

Ryobi Safari?

Fri, 2008-12-12 15:57

Bit weighty at 750g but it should put the clamps on quite nicely at that line poundage given they rate it for 40 - 50lb line.

You'll probably get 450m+ of 15 - 20lb on it.

They are definately not a medium spinning reel

Fri, 2008-12-19 20:32

Stradics, Twinpowers, SOLs or Heartlands would all do nicely.

In terms of Shimano vs Daiwa

Sat, 2008-12-20 06:31

In terms of Shimano vs Daiwa is the Stradic on par with the Sol and is the Twin Power on par with the Heartland??

Any opinions welcome

New Daiwa Exceller DA

Sat, 2008-12-20 06:51

Whats everyones opinion on the new Exceller from Daiwa? Doesn't look like they changed it much, only the colour? was originally planning on getting the previous model for this application but was told they get sticky drags? or should i just go the extra $$$ n get quality?

Also, anybody know anything about upgrading medium threadlines, drags, handles, what else is their? and would it still be worth considering upgrading the drag on say the Heartland just to be sure?

Cheers

I have two new model Stradics and a Heartland WODF

Sat, 2008-12-20 09:30

The Stradics are very good value for the money. Plenty of power, good internals. The Heartland, which is quite a bit more expensive, is a bit smoother. If you go for a Heartland under the 4000 model you might want to unpgrade the handle if you have meaty hands like me.

Half way there now

Wed, 2008-12-31 07:30

Half way there now. Purchased a Nitro Magg Butt on Monday from Cambells. I was stuck between this and the Viper but went for the Magg Butt due to being a bit longer and a bit more flexible. It feels awesome! Yet to get the reel.

Thnx to everyone for their inputs

Another reel option is the new Abu Garcia Soron WODF

Wed, 2008-12-31 07:39

I bought one recently and they have a very smooth drag, are very strong and are very good value.
