Maggots

ewwwww ;)
Thought I might try for some tasty Hezzbolars in the morning.
If I don't hurl first, am going to try and use maggots for bait.

Because they are so tiny, do I use the smallest hook possible, or just put lots of them on the norm herring rig?

use a #10 and put 4-6 on it, herring bite it + you can catch gars.

if possible use live maggots, they are better then dead ones

my uncle makes them a really good way, it fattens them up, and cleans them out!

While you have them in the fridge MAKE SURE the lid on the container is a good fit.

I started out freshwater

Thu, 2010-01-07 20:07

I started out freshwater angling in the UK as a kid as 1/2 pint of live maggots was standard bait...

There's nothing unclean about them if produced in a controlled environment.

At the thick end they have a kind of 'flap' - hook them through this rather than piercing the body as this will keep them alive longer and also means no inside stuff leaks out. Cool

Here's a super close-up of one. It's rather nice.

The flap is actually the head which just protrudes slightly.

Have fun :-)

honestly , maggots also

Thu, 2010-01-07 21:25

honestly , maggots also known as wogs work a treat. as mentioned live ones are best by far.good part about using maggots is that you put several on the hook at once which means it takes more than 1 or 2 bites to remove them they also are great bait gardies . Jody , toughen up and use the live ones

Hey Jody how did you go with the maggots?  I'm with you on the ewwwww factor and Buschy's pic just does not help.  But if they actually catch something then it could be all worth while. Smile   Jen

years ago everyone used to

Fri, 2010-01-08 07:23

years ago everyone used to use maggots for bait around the north and south mole. they always outfished any other bait that was being used. i used to breed my own much to my mothers disgust but from what i understand now it is illegal to do so, then again what people dont know dont hurt them

Well.......

Fri, 2010-01-08 07:49

Not that good actually, but they were frozen.
Gave them a fair try a couple of times without one hit, but as soon as I changed to the squid legs it was a fish a cast.

Might have to stick with them as I don't think my KIDS would let me get away with storing live ones in the fridge hehehe

Hi Ya, Old thread I know

Fri, 2010-01-22 13:58

Hi Ya,

Old thread I know but I saw a guy on TV the other night eating live maggots.  Reckoned they are full of high quality protein.

Maybe you should have eaten the maggots Jodie and used the squid for bait.

Cheers.
