Mackie Lures

G'day guys, trying to target a metro mackie this season and just wondering what everyones goto lures are for them?
I cant rig a bait to swim to save my life.. so we usually have a mixed spread of skirts on top and some shallow and deep divers, have been doing well on tuna so far this season but no sign of a mackie yet
have been heard good things about the Rapala deep divers, just wondering if there are any others worth trying?

Allways done well with purple
Allways done well with purple or blue xraps but the 30 footers, they put a lot of drag on your reel mate so make sure your reels up for it
As far as skirts go Pakula micro Uzi and next 2 sizes up have accounted for a lot of fish for me, evil angel my fav colour clear sparkle and pink run at shot gun

Red heads have always been a crowd favourite - the deep divers are fine but I have found the extra deep divers hard to keep in the water (no matter how much I try and tweak them).
I also have had success with the rapala clakin' magnums and they're a much better lure to run deep.

halco lures are the go.
chrome pink, red head, king brown, and done forget the "lucky green" up close

red head 2m halcos. I dont use wire and cant remember the last one I had bitten off. Just leader 100lb with a barra loop style knot. I dont know perth but 90 percent of mackies up in exmouth are caught before 7am or after 5pm. Rest of the day is virtually useless unless casting stickbaits at bait schools or fusiliers.

I've heard similar but I've also heard that using a downrigger when the sun is higher can be better. It was something like they don't like to rise up the near the surface when the sun is high because they are more easily spotted from below by bigger preditors..
I don't know how true it is but it makes sense...

Not cheap but the Yo Zuri Hydro Magnums swim brilliantly at a good speed and never had one go sideways on me. Unfortunately I am still yet to nail a mack on one but caught a few tuna on it.
How I missed this mack I'll never know. Made a rookie error of whacking it into neutral on hookup

Shitloads here now, seen more macks in the last week than i have in my whole life. As Gilly said in another post most people are driving over them, stick in close, we found them in 4m last week

skirts and shallow divers
skirts and shallow divers early morning (or poppers), swap to deep divers as the sun gets higher usually works.. If you want the lures to run deeper and straight swap out the trebles to owners or bkk etc as they will stop the lure running off centre (halco trebles are crap anyway)

...in your trolling spread. The metal bib flashing in the sunlight can be the deal-breaker.

Keep it simple
Last year at kalbarri they were spanking deep divers shallow runners rapalas and halco all day, 40 degrees still as.if their hungry they'll feed.

The old redheads are a standby up here.
But I have not found them to be not much good up near Exmouth. Sure, you can catch the odd fish, but the colour up there is the Halco Stripey, the purple one. In any kind of lure. And also works well here. My favorite everywherein recent years has been the Rapala X-Rap 30. Only buy them if they are on special ( around $21) too exxy at full price to feed to sharks. keep your eyes skinned, I cleaned out BCF Geraldtons' stock recently when they were at $20.99. The Abrolhos Lures equivilant seems to be just as good, and a lot cheaper. Oceanside has them for about $21.50 regular price, I think. They just don't have the same range of colours as the Rapala.
I find trolling for Wahoo more fun, nowadays. Strikes at 16 knots are memorable

Red n white Halco 2mtr for me up north, seen it hit surrounded by other brands/colours too many times!!
Also i find Macks like the boat wash, keep lures in tighter, opposite to Tuna fish......

Picked up some halco 2m and 7m divers chrome red heads and spent a bit of time looking for them behind 5 fathom/south of rotto on Saturday morning..
found a few big bust ups of tuna again and got a few on board but still no mackies
Gonna have to spend some more time researching where to look this week I think

My pick for sure. The 190's are my go to
Always ran a Redhead and King brown in the spread. Don't like the XDD (extra deep diver) for Mack's, but trolling slower over reefs (5knots) its the go to for Coral trout. As mentioned above trolling at my Macky speed of 8knots+ a bit they don't travel as well. So I use the XD or STD.
Dark days they seem to go the Qantas, whereas bright days the King Brown appears to work better.
Have tried a few other colours but remember, Im talking about the days in Karratha, so the situation down here may be different.
I still think all colours would work, but experience tell me the 2 colours I mentioned works a little bit better.
Have tried other lures that cost a lot more but always go back to the local Halco's.
