Looking for a new spin rod & reel to take to Wagoe, suggestions please?

Hey guys im off to Wagoe for a long weekend in april & havent been before (although im going with some guys who have). My set up is a 14ft ozflex su40/penn 850 ss & my old penn captiva 6000 spin combo (9ft) & will be landbased. Ive heard fishing up there with big lures is the way to go, but im pretty sure my penn won't stand up to that. My budgets around $400 (for the rod & reel) & im thinking I'd like something capable of banging pretty large lures out, but at the same time not too heavy as its gonna get a fair bit of use i'd imagine. Any info/suggestions on any of the above info would be greatly appreciated guys, Cheers!

Casting combo

Mon, 2014-03-17 10:25

Hey for something to use all day and under budget try a daiwa exceller 4000 $150 with a diawa jig caster 9'6 heavy $209. Reel comes with two spools so will be versatile for land based or boat. May be a little slow on the retrieve so could also go a 5000 shimano Stradic for $200-$220.

For lobbing baits and skull dragging activities try a diawa sensor surf 13ft $230 with a windcast x5500 $220. Again reel with two spools. A little over budget but prob easier to cast lures with for long periods than the penn combo u have.

Timberwolf graphite $100 rovex aurious $120 roughly, two rods light as a feather and strong, good enough for one trip, i took these rods to steep point and did not let me down, diawa 4500 saltist h , penn r ok but you do work harder on the retrieve...

Thanks for all the info guys,

Thanks for all the info guys, yeah the ozflex/penn combo I use mainly for slidebaiting (only got into it at the end of last summer, decided to make other use of all the herring about), or in the rougher conditions,  but some of the guys I'm going with go ballooning (if the winds favourable up there) so hopefully they'll show me how as Ive never tried it! Im definately leaning towards a lightweight combo though as that penn reel gets pretty heavy after a while, now Ive got an idea ill go give a few a feel an take the reel just in case I find a rod it might work with.

I'm a little late here and

I'm a little late here and you may have bought stuff already but here's my 2 bits. Ballooning is a set and wait affair. Many use boat gear as even though rod is a bit short o/h reel has the line capacity which is needed in Wagoe. Borrow an outfit if you can.  For spinning, not sure what rod you have with your Penn combo but if it may do perhaps all you need is a new reel. Something like Shimano Stradic 5000fj $249 weighs 305gm. I've seen guys use this with 7' rod on a boat bringing up sambos so reel will take punishment. Daiwa Seagate 3500 $349 weighs 395gm is another choice. Daiwa Saltist 4500 tougher but weighs 595gm which is too heavy for me for spinning lures all day. An appropriate reel with higher ratio and weighing around 400gm is what I will choose. Higher ratio so you're not too tired spinning lures all day. If really need a rod then I second Stano's choice in budget range of Timberwolf or Rovex. For a little more money look at FWA 9ft as this is based on a Toray blank. All depends on weight of the lures you intend to cast. You need a rod that will comfortably handle the weight all day.

Hi there - my two cents,

Wed, 2014-05-21 18:39

Hi there - my two cents, this is what I use:

Heavy Surf Combo - 13ft Snyderglass 2 piece with Shimano Saragosa 18000 with 50lb Finns Braid. - Cause you just never know what may take ya Line !!

Meduim - Popper / Lure combo - 10ft OZflex Custom Graphite with Shimano Sustain 10000 FG - 20lb Finns

Light / Soft Palstics combo - Diawa Super Cast 7'6 graphite with Shimano Sustain 5000 FG - 15lb Finns.

None of them have ever let me down and they get used regularly - Secret is to clean them after every trip - look after them and they will look after you !!

Lines tight everyone......
