Line looping around tip when casting

Tested out my new rod and reel today. Pflueger Crank Big Bait with Saragossa 10k spooled with 50lb braid and a wind on 80lb leader. Spooled and leader tied to line at Oceanside.

Nearly every cast resulted in the braid looping around the tip. It appeared to occur just after the braid to Leader knot (I think they used an FG) passed through the last guide.

I started casting a 4oz star sinker and Mulie. One cast flew perfectly, I was stoked with the distance and pulled in a herring. I then switched to a live bait rig with the herring and a small running ball sinker.

Apart from the cast when I caught the fish, all others resulted in the line looping around the tip and significantly reducing the distance of the cast.

I'm thinking this cuold be caused by poor technique, leader is too large in diameter, sinker too light, over spooled etc.

Please let me know your thoughts and any tips to narrow down the cause and find a solution.

This can happen if you let your finger off the line too early in your casting action or from your leader being too long and it sits on the spool and grabs line as you cast or from your line being spooled too loose

Could be loose line

Hence when you caught fish was ok. Go to park big snap lock ( connect to something)walk 100 m away lock drag. Reel line back in tight.

Try a bigger sinker with the live bait. I'd say the speed of just the herring and light sinker coming off is slowed down fairly quickly but the line wants to keep coming off at the same speed so the line inside the tip overtakes the line outside and loops over.

Not sure if that made sense, it did before I typed it out

 Think you're on the money

Think you're on the money Hutch. Have had a similar problem with large baits and a small running sinker. Bigger sinker or put a stopper up the line so the sinker keeps taking line with it.

Hey mate I see lots of crew have this issue gt fishin. You need the leader knot off the spool when casting. I usually tie a leader so the leader sits somewhere near the first guide.  I never have this problem its only when I fish with somone trying to cast with the leader on the reel that I have a laugh when they rip a guide or tip off casting a big lump of wood.

Thanks Cruzy,

I'm keen to understand more. Many of the posts I have read and advice received was for the leader to be long enough for 3-4 winds around the spool. Would welcome your thoughts on this.

Despite preferring to have my finger on mono than braid when casting, I would prefer to cast without the line twisting over the rod tip.

I need to get down the beach to try some of the suggestions above.

Fails short leader. Mine are only 1 meter long. But my casting reels are overheads . Trial and error. Many goods points from everyone. Good luck
