Licences may be going

The ABC is suggesting that the fishing licence proposal may not be going ahead. Norman Moore will be on ABC 720 soon to talk about it.

Lets keep our

fingers crossed Colin H, we need some restrictions but not hurting the average family that loves to fish as a family outing for the day etc, sometimes just for fun. Total discrimination against the boat license and no license for shore based, should be a license for everybody, as we love to fish in the boat and on the beach.

What sticks in my throat and I think most fisho's is the professionals can STILL fish in the two month bans when the fish are supposted to be breeding, it will be murder if the pros can fish in peek breeding times, hit a school of breeding fish and whamo good bye school of fish, either using long lines or net.

as the dhuie's, baldie, we have caught in late January, middle of February all had roe in them, and you could see the males had bite marks on them from rutting with the females, some of them had quite a few scales missing, naughty boys

Yes but it could the lead up that affects their wanting to Tango?

It will be interesting to see what the next proposal is. By the sound of things a new management stratergy isnt going to go away. Its a matter of how it will be done.

Mr Moore told ABC listeners that if the other

members of his party do not support his licensing plan he may have to consider ideas such as 6 month bans. Sounded a bit like blackmail to me.

1 high risk species

Fri, 2009-08-21 11:54

1 high risk species (ie. Dhuies, snapper, Baldies etc) per person per day. Surely this would have a dramatic impact on the amount of fish taken? But it would still let everyone have a go. Six month bans sound worse than the licenses - next he'll say that we can still fish as long as we don't use hooks.....

if labour reject this one

and get in again anytime soon we will all need to get into the crash position because they will need to save face after last time and we will be lucky if we get only 6 months

No i dont think we should

Fri, 2009-08-21 18:53

No i dont think we should pay for any licence or any of that crap , we have to pay the government enough already, if we took care of our own country instead of importing all our good stuff and importing all the shit stuff. Not only that , japs and poms n all them fished there waters out why should we let them trawl in our oceans ?? Like the proposed sea bed trawl in northern western australia , !! we get enough damage to our reefs and marine species by illegal indo fishers . Boundaries need to be set an new rules , but money aint everything . there are always other solutions to solve problems that do not involve huge ammounts of money ! So i hope we dont have to pay for fishing.

i think you are on a different track

Fri, 2009-08-21 19:47

First how many aust fishing rods and reels do you own.The licenses and bans are to protect Dhu Snapper and Baldie ect and i spend a lot of time on the water each year as do a lot of people on this site if there was an english or japanese trawler out of perth i think we would know.If the fee gets overturned then we will almost surely get a longer closed season in which i am glad i dont work in a fishing based town or work in the tackle or boat related industries. We can only hope it doesnt go that way because i know of three boat builders that will be closing up.Tackle stores are already closing down.Im not all doom and gloom but a small cost to save a large fishing based sector is in my opinion a small price for others financial security. So if you work in the tackle or fishing related jobs and your lose your income from longer closures then let it be known that i was prepared to pay my $150 bucks so dont get pis@ed of at me.

I wish for once, the media

Fri, 2009-08-21 20:20

I wish for once, the media would stop pre-empting things, there are certain procedures that have to be adhered to, before these proposals will be defeated.

im in two minds with it

Sat, 2009-08-22 09:56

im in two minds with it really i dont mind paying the 150 dollars to fish and i also dont mind the ban theres always other options than deep sea plenty of great landbased ares scattered all over our coast just have to explore new things but i do beileve they need to put some time and effort into working out a system that is fair on everybody and is going to acctualy do the fish stocks justice.

What really annoys me, is

Sat, 2009-08-22 12:57

What really annoys me, is the amount of "professional bashing" that goes on in this site, they have far more restrictions that you would be aware of and their costs are far bigger than you realise. Not only that, the professionals are doing it worse than any of us. Has anybody taken the time to look through the boating web sites and see the amount of crayboats that are for sale. If all the cray boats were sold, then their would be no cray fishing industry, more unemployed and then the full "knock on effect".

We had bag limit reductions

Sat, 2009-08-22 16:01

We had bag limit reductions this year, did the pro's get a similar reduction? Norman Moore is saying we need a 50% reduction in catches to maintain sustainable fisheries. Are the pros having a 50% catch reduction?

As for cray fishermen, some 95%+ of the catch is professionals (i think its 97-98%). Most of which is exported. Recs make up only a few percent.

If they're feeling hard done by, its only because they are taking more than is sustainable (perhaps there are more boats than the fishery can sustain). If the fishery was in top shape, then they wouldnt be having a hard time. You cant blame just the recs if the pros are taking the majority of the catch.

Pros have lots of regulations and limits, yes, and you cant really blame the individual owners from wanting to go out and make some money just like everyone else does. However, if there are problems, they need to be addressed somewhere (probably for the most part governmental management).  I'm not having a go at the pros themselves, but hopefully you can see why people are feeling that the pros and recs arent being treated the same by the government, and why the recs would be annoyed about it. (and nevermind the whole IFM/TAC thing)

Nah stuff em

Cry me a river ... its no different to any business, if you cant make a living off it then get out of that business and go do something else.

Same with the whinging farmers or any other business whatsoever, (my parents are farmers) and i feel the same about them, its just another form of business and as i tell my father, if you cant make a living out of it then get out of it, sell up, but dont cry to the world expecting people to give a shit, when times are good then thats good for you, if times are bad well you gotta take the good with the bad or get out of it and do something else.

You dont hear johns butcher crying or annes florist shop whinging to the world if she cant keep the business doors open.

So dont just sit there whinging about the poor me bullshit because your a primary producer.

Id be curious to know how much of the fresh professionally caught fish in the market place is not sold and is actually wasted?

Sat, 2009-08-22 15:33

It's not a pro bash mate think about it if came to the crunch should we all give up fishing to allow a comercial industry to continue. No i agree it's not cheap for them to go out and catch a tone of V5 and it's not cheap for us to catch 4 fish either espicaily when we can't claim expenses against tax ey.

knowing what the regs were

Sun, 2009-08-23 09:01

knowing what the regs were 20 yrs ago for the pro boats (wetlining)i can only imagine what they are going through now.if it wasnt for the pro's there would be more pressure on our red meat supply and the prices would be a lot higher than they are now as there is a huge market for fresh fish in oz , would you go and pay $45 p/kg for a steak , no you wouldnt . so lay of the pros they are doing it tough as well as the rest of us. jmo
