The rule is a bit tricky to read.

Working on the new (as each year the rules change) Feb 2013 Pink Snapper size for metro water is 500mm.

The 500mm size has been in for all of 2012.

The rules talk about 31'. ..... the 31' line is just north of Lancerlain. ....... So in the West Coast bio region south of this 31' latudiude Pink snapper must be 500mm long to be a keeper. Perth metro is south of 31' so Cockburn snapper must be 500mm long to be keepers.

Clear as mud?   Probably  :)

Have a look at the bag limits for KGW the new guide. It's increased from 8 in the old guide to 12. Figure that one.

It's been 50cm minimum size for pink snapper in the metro region since about 2010...

Was 41cm in about 2008, then increased to 45cm for a year, then up to 50cm.

I know it was 50cm last season, it's the new book of rules that make it confusing.

Can anyone explain why the minimum legal Pink Snapper size in WA is a whopping 500mm whilst in NSW it is 300mm ? Is there a scientific reason for that ?

Yes

Snapper dont breed until nearly 40cm and depending on water temp and location some even getting up towards 50.

The legal size in the east coast is more due to commercial lobbying than anything else. If they raised it the catch of near shore snapper would drop until they reach the new size limit. Research shows the same breeding size for SA,Vic and NSW fish but the min size is still way below breeding size.

And they have a lot more of them than we do here as well, so they can afford to lose a few before breeding.

OK, so we now we are regulated in this state to target the breeders. What is the science in targetting breeders ? Can yopu provide links to this science ? Can you provide evidence to NSW waters having more abundance of Pink Snapper than WA waters ? Serious questions.
