Passed a boat yesterday in about 50m of water and it had a pro cray pot rope tied to the bow.
Is that legal?

Not Legal
Called interferring with others fishing gear, huge fines if caught. You don't have to pull the pot to be found guilty.
Don't want to get sprung by the owner or you could find yourself swimming in

But what if you get accidentally hooked on one
Has only happened twice to me in many years but I always have bright orange plastic flags with a zip tie to attach to warn pro of sinker danger .....could this be considered tampering with gear?

Gear
If you have snagged a pot, pro or rec, and you don't have anything to attach to the floats, then tie them together, this will give the decky a warning that there is hooks and sinker coming his way.

Get done for sure
I always tie rag around float. If I loose gear on pro pot. Sinker coming up at speed not good. Do serious injury to deckie.

Thought so. It’s definitely something I wouldn’t do. I’ve found drifting is much better than anchoring anyway. If I see it again I’ll give them the heads up

If its a small patch you are better anchoring because with each drift over the school you take some of the fish away and spreads them out, anchoring lets you keep them all together

Excess Rope.
Went out from Ocean reef on sunday. There was a long line of Pro pots just behind the reef with about 20 meters of rope floating behind each pot. Needless to say i caught up on the last one only because the floats were dark and i didnt pick them up in time. No damage, didnt go round the prop.

Cray ropes
Apparently whales only get caught up in recreational ropes as behind the 5 Fathom the other day pros had heaps of rope on top and whales in the area, if they were rec ropes your only allowed a metre or two on top, go figure.

I am under the
I'm under the impression all pot users had to keep excessive rope restricted to a couple of metres to lessen the risk of whales getting caught in ropes.

Pro floats a month ago. Heaps of rope on top ,thought the same .
