Sad really when you think of the people who for cannot go and catch them because of age, infirmity or other reason will miss out on supposedly the best crabs in WA.
most of the crabs sold in WA supermarkets come from Shark Bay anyways. And if you took old Joe-smoo and put a Swan crab and a Shark Bay crab in front of him, he would never taste the difference mate.!!!
So if you too old or frail or can't go crabing, then pop into Crab Shack in Freo or your local fish monger and get some Shark Bay bluemanners and enjoy them for a lot less $$$ than owning a boat and paying for fuel and going out in the cold to get your own,,,,;-)

I agree that it's sad and if you go to seafoodlovers.com.au you will see some action there in support of this bloke. I haven't digested all the information yet to make an opinion but it certainly is interesting. Put it this way, if the Gov't forced me to sell out on anything I would be cranky as and chasing the media.
Seems he knew the writing was on the wall when he got the license, i see Minister Moore has to get rid of him or all the old Pros will want to come back because they were told its closing for Pros.
$250,000 a year he makes on crabs,,thats a lot of crabs ripped out of the Swan River each year but just one person.

Dont agreee shorty... How much do the cray pros make?? some are well up in that area.
i tell you what tho, i do like the idea of researchers going out on his boat...how much more accurate data could you get?
Sorry but i dont like the current minister.. Reserve my views on this subjet, but I'd be interested to know, do cray fisherman, shark fishermen, dhhie pros allow researchers out on their boats?
When I was shark fishing we would always get a call from shark research for one of their crew to come and do trips with us.Working from Hedland doing 10-14 day trips we would tag and release nearly all of the sand bar whalers[thickskins] which involved unhooking[not cutting trace off]measuring, tagging and injecting them with a dye that shows up in their spine like a growth ring on a tree. All this on sharks around 2.0 metres. On their release we would have to give a point score on how they swam off as an indicator on how many may survive.
During these trips with the research people we got to know them quite well and later on when doing shark netting down south the same thing applied. If we got something unusual they were always quick to come down and gather samples/data for their research.Speaking to them while dropping a line in they have said sometimes they would recognise the landmarks andknow from past experience on other boats that we were only a couple of hundred metres away from a red hot spot but they couldn't tell you because of the confidentiality agreements with all the fishermen on them coming on board and without the agreement none of the fishermen would allow them on board.
As for him earning $250,000 a year,in your dreams!!!he paid that for the licence. If he made over $50-60 grand a year after expenses I'd be surprised.
The crabs that come down from up here in Carnarvon are a minimum size of 129mm across the carapace 2mm more than the amateur size that is the reason they look bigger on average than locally caught crabs
If you could track him down, ask him if you can take a trip out with him.More than likely he will agree,it will open your eyes up to see things from the "other side of the fence"
Its a tough call , as stated before folks that want Swan River crabs and can't catch then themselves will not be able to buy them.
On the other hand it was decided 5 years ago that crabbing will finish and this chap knew that when he brought the license,,now he wants 2.5 millon compensation for 10 years loss of future earnings.
If he does not go every Pro crab fisher will want to come back and all the hard work done by everybody over the years could come unstuck.

The guy knew what to expect, Lic cost $250000. 5 years earnings =$1250000. Not bad if you can get it. So whats his problem. And now he wants us [tax payers] to coff up 2.5 million bucks, fair go.

Looks like Mandurah will
Looks like Mandurah will become a ghost town in 5 years over the summer break... 50% of the homes are already empty for most of the year :)
