Large boat sinking off Garden Island

Whilst leaving from work this afternoon from Garden Island, just crossed the High level Bridge when I saw the flashing lights of a Police water vessel. I then saw he was trying to tow a vessel in obvious distress. There was no way he was going to make any headway as the vessel was well down by the stern. The vessel was approximately 200 meters off the bridge, in Cockburn Sound.

The vessel looked quite new, I guess 7-9 meters long and had a flying bridge. A very nice looking vessel, felt sorry for the owner. Don't know any other details

I heard 4 blokes in a ali runabout were rescued just of GI at 10pm last night after they ran aground the rescue groups down here do a top job but I think the entrance to south channel could do with some more beacons it would be tricky coming in there at night

I believe the four gents in the runabout last night hit a reef and then they activated their EPIRB and were subsequently rescued

I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

lets hope he was insured

I hope he had insured it. I didn't hear on the news that it had hit anything though. It will be interesting to see what caused the sinking.
Very sorry for the person who just brought it

At a guess most likely took

Wed, 2013-07-10 08:37

At a guess most likely took on water due to a intake/exhaust or other hose/drain fittings damage. small possibility of bungs being the culprit. Other possibility is holing the hull from an object strike/grounding (hard to say with limited info)

should have an float switch connected to an alarm in the bilge to alert to this (in addition to the bilge pumps).

Hope they took out insurance upon purchase.
Cheers

looks like an early Mariner

looks like an early Mariner -good solid boat - says nothing about a grounding and that water was coming in but it was unknown where??
suggest maybe seacock (water intakes for engines) or more so the pipes that run off it, but that would take a while to fill a boat........

Either way looks like a bad day out

looking at the way its

looking at the way its sitting in the water it appears to be the steering compartment flooded not the engineroom.

could be stern drive - some

Wed, 2013-07-10 16:56

could be stern drive - some of the 34 mariners were volvo stern drive - all that takes is a build of of barnacles on the belows and a few sharp turns to tear the bellows then you are taking water quickly -
