Karratha

Hey Guys,

As some of you may know ive tee'd up a job in Karratha and moving there at the end of next month!

Just a few Q's for the lads up there:

What is the best frequency/range on the water? VHF i presume?

Coming into this time of year, what species turn on?

Mostly keen on the popping, trolling baits/hardbodies, jigging and high speed spinning for G's, Queenie's, Sailys, Macks etc. Are these types of fishing accessable for a 4.2m widebody centre console?

Any other input on what to do/what to look out for up there would be mint.

Only fished Dampier/Karratha once last year shorebased and seem to have the bluebone and other little shore based GTs, Brassys and Queenies sussed. Just after a bit more info on the wider side of things.

Ill be working for Adam at Adventure Sports, so pop in and say hi if you're around!!

Cheers,

Sam

Hope I can help

The size of the boat is a little concern but you certainly on a good day could get into pelagic action. From now on the billies start to turn up, and Mackies are always there.

Popping for GTs always on the cards, but ask Jay that question. He is the man.

That is the perfect size for the creeks and the Barra is still about, but the weather has been cooler than usual and that shuts them down.

As Adam said, working there Sam you will soon be in the goss and also see me around.

Cheers

Cheers Neels, im sure

Cheers Neels, im sure scouting around there looking for ground can't be too hard.

I sussed out exmouth well within the first couple of times going there. After having a look through my charts on the plotter there seems to be a shitload of likely ground off Dampier and the back beach.

If the weathers good there's

Thu, 2010-02-25 19:12

If the weathers good there's not much you can't catch in a 4.2... some people regularly catch marlin and sails out of boats that size but like I said... very weather dependant and if it decides to blow up you're a long way from land in a not so big boat.. GT's are a little easier to access but without good weather you'll still struggle in a boat that size... although launching from withnell bay and up through flying foam can see you in some pretty good ground in no time and it's a great shortcut for smaller boats. Weather has been unseasonaly cool this year (and unseasonaly windy) so you might struggle to get barras at the end of next month if you have little experience. There's lots of light tackle options around the islands though so I'm sure you won't struggle to find something to do.

Thanks guys, spose my tinny

Thu, 2010-02-25 19:47

Thanks guys, spose my tinny will be just for mucking around the islands spinning etc. Just pick the weather as Jay said, spose its like everywhere though..

Have a few mates up there with larger boats, so hopefully i wont need to take my boat out wide too much which i am more than capable of doing.
