Jigging the Super Deep Jigs - awesome day on the water!

Well with the ban being lifted yesterday I was just itching to get back out. I love the Super Deep fish and ever more so jigging that depth for them. The current and drift speed often works against me out there but these Japanese Super Deep 750 & 1kg jigs sorted that out!

Blake my shop manager was also keen to get his arm stretched so off we went. I sounded around and located fish on an edge and down went my Super Deep Jig. This is the first time using this jig and holy shit its flutter action is far better than I expected (being so heavy) but the centre weight is awesome and had plenty of flash & action!

First drop I got a small Bass groper, Blake then got a nice Greyband (shark had a swipe on the way up), I then got a Hapuku and Blake finished off with a cracker Bass Groper on the Super Deep 1kg which put a massive smile on his dial!

We could feel the action of the jig in 400m of water and all fish smashed the Super Deep jigs hard. Aggressive hits indeed and some fish hit the jigs on the up jig and some on the flutter down!

My small Bass on the Super Deep Jig!

Blakes Greybanded cod on the Super Deep Jig!

My Hapuku on the Super Deep Jig!

Well done Blake getting quality fish on jig & good company mate

did any green eyes fancy the jigs?

would you say the jigs are more fishable than bait set up ?like better at staying on the bottom?

Super Deep!

Sun, 2011-12-18 15:22

Cheers fellas, yeh they give your arms a work out and you feel it the next day but what a buzz!

A good sounder Brad really helps out.....I love my Furuno!

Diabolical, gear wise I use a Daiwa electric reel with the Jigging Master Drag upgrade kit (makes a huge difference). Rod is a Jigging Master Evolution Titanium 400 OH rod........braid 80lb Berkley Whiplash!

thesupervisor, as for your questions;

did any green eyes fancy the jigs? No

would you say the jigs are more fishable than bait set up ?like better at staying on the bottom? Heavy sinker & bait holds the bottom a bit better but I prefer my jigging!

reece, still a few left mate but going out the door quick.....see you then!

Lucky Tim, yeh the timing for good weather & the ban being lifted was perfect. As for reel wise I'm using my Daiwa electric but I'm not using the jigging functions of the electric.............manual wind up after hook up!

Thanks for all your comments guys =)

This maybe a silly question

Sun, 2011-12-18 15:35

If you dont use the jig function and then you manually wind up after hook up why use an electric reel?

Because;

When I miss the fish ie current/wind/drift changes (happens) - I use the electric!

If I drift over the fish and they dont bite (happens) - I use the electric!

Hook a fish - manual wind up ......earn the fish

Makes sense now.I try not to miss the fish but its not so easy in 400 to 500 meters. Are you still working the pro boat from time to time?

me too!

Sun, 2011-12-18 16:14

I try not to miss the fish either but yes in 300-500m current/wind/drift changes do happen. I went to another really good spot that day where I drifted right over the fish several times but they wouldnt hit the jigs so thats where the electric is awesome

I helped my step-bro out several years ago when he was one decky down......he's been up north now for a fair while with good crew & lovin it!

Super-Deep!

Wed, 2011-12-21 11:03

Harro, you wont be disapointed mate in these jigs as they catch fish and you have good spots

fishfish, the drag upgrade is awesome and we have sold out of the upgrade washes due to the electric reels being popular with the super deep but we have ordered more. My manager Blake will PM you when they are back in stock and we'll give you your FW price!

I've had a few FW members PM & pop into the shop recently to ask about super deep advice/info and they ask do I still use bait. The answer is yes "if the jigs arent producing & time is running out". Its a long way out to rely on jigs and as much as I do well on jigs and last Friday Blake & myself cleaned up you can have days where the fish are fussy (thats fishing)

I took out my manager Blake again yesterday for more super deep fishing and I hit up several good spots (including Fridays jigging spot) that showed a shit load of quality super deep species but the fussy buggers just didnt want to bite hard like Friday. We drifted over fish too many times I'd like to count. I hooked up twice to solid big fish but they spat the jig after a short fight and for what ever reason they were very tentative (go figure after Friday smashin the jigs)

THATS why I use the electric reel  as if I was to wind up manually it would of been over in the first hour let alone the whole day

I defrosted some californian squid & scaly mackerel as bait, Blake had first drop and was into Bass Groper on the patternoster. I dropped after that and hooked a descent fish but kept it down there for a few seconds( wanting a double header) and my Jigging Master 400 rod fully loaded up to something solid. At that stage I knew I was onto a quality double header as drag was peeling of my Daiwa electric reel. The manual wind up killed me due to the big double but I love earning my fish and some 495m later I boated this double header!

My PB Hapuku so I'm stoked

Hapuku went 22kg (1 part of the double header)

Greybanded cod 19kg (the other part of the double header)

Half an hour fight is some

Wed, 2011-12-21 12:25

Half an hour fight is some solid winching.

Do they largely float up by themselves once they are half way or so as the air in them expands?

____________________________________________________________________________

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

dkonig82, all the Super Deep fish excluding the Blue-eye trevalla fight to the 40/50m mark then they float up for me ........... that double header was the heaviest/hardest/longest fight I've had!

All my Super Deep frames & DNA tissue was picked up by Research this morning..........steps forward to better understanding these fish!

Cheers fellas, its a great experience the Super Deep stuff indeed and I still get a huge buzz out there after 3 years of doing it!
