Jeep or Pajero
Submitted by shonky on Mon, 2013-05-06 19:20
I'm looking at buying a new tug for the boat and van and it's come down to either a jeep grand Cherokee or a mitsi Pajero, both auto diesels. Does anyone know of any underlying problems with either of these two cars that the dealers are "forgetting" to mention ?
cheers guys

mate i have a triton and sometimes while driving the car shuts off and comes to a rolling stop. turn the car off and back on again and everything is fine. i have herd it has been hapening to heaps of tritons and pajeros from about the ml and mn tritons onwards. something to do with the electronic safety features to protect the engine. just google pajero issues or jeep issues and read a bit on the forums. plenty of info on them.

Out of those 2 it'd be the Mitsubishi. Jeeps are terrible cars. But overall I'd get a prado in that range. I'm 10 years in the car industry.

Oh jeez, Jeep or Mits, whats your budget mate, I mean you can buy a money pit regardless of the manufacturer, certainly not doing you any favours by narrowing it down to those two, but hay, might suit your name haha

about three months ago my work mate "had" a new jeep cherokee auto he took it for its maiden beach run down at white hills with me (in a prado) and another work mate (in his navara),his car started to get warm he pulled over to let it cool down and it caught on fire, gone in five minutes... insurance assessor said it is very common occurrence in jeeps. so after witnessing that i would personally never buy a jeep myself, i would definately go with the pajero over a jeep anyday,

Ha Ha. all the Jeep haters on
Ha Ha. all the Jeep haters on here. I have had a Prado for years and always been a toyota man. I recently bought a 3ltr turbo diesel Trailhawk jeep. Yes the older models earlier than around 2009 left o lot to be desired. They have come a long way. The new diesel models get nearly 1000km range on the one tank and 3.5T towing and 540nM of torque will leave most of the cars mentioned above for dead. This thing will go anywhere. Put in the extra sub tank and the range is almost 2000kms. There are alot of videos on the net of Jeeps showing all the landcruisers, pajeros, and Nissans up. For every story you guys have heard about a Jeep so called "Catching on fire" or breaking down there are 1000 stories of Landcruiser/Hilux/Prado/Pajero/Patrol/Navara/Tritions burnig out clutches in the first 5000km's, Transmissions crapping themselves on the first beach run, O/heating issues and the likes. Personally i think its down to personal taste. The ALL have issues its just the luck of the draw as to whether you bought the lemon of the production line or not. Do some research into what you want out of the vehicle mate. If you listen to every tom, dick and harry whos had a mate, who knew a mate whos car crapped itself you'd never buy anything. Jeeps new grand Cherokee has won 4wd of the year for 2 years in a row has to say something for the design and features.

Paj
Me and the old man both have NT Pajero Diesels - Previosly had a NS as well.
All have been excellent, and all used for towing. We tow a 2.3t boat, get 6-6.5k/l towing on trips to coral bay, and the old man is towing a 2.6t van around aust at the moment and is loving it.
Only bad points we have with them is the tow hitch is low, but easy to overcome with a reece hitch setup and its only a 90L tank. ARB do a second tank, think 60L for them which sits in really nicely.
Wouldnt have any hesitation in getting another Pajero!

geez fellas you're all a bit
geez fellas you're all a bit harsh, google any new 4WD and you'll find bad stuff. i brought a 200 series landcruiser and did the google thing as well and sure enough there has been plenty of issues including their appetite for oil and what not.
I had a NS Pajero T/D in manual, loved it but it did stuggle to pull the 2.5T boat easily but a NT model with the extra grunt would do it easy! 900kms to the tank on the highway too and i never chipped it either so if it doesn't have the grunt you need at least you have options. Resale is the big one and both won't hold much value. i drove a Jeep before buying the 200 series, flash car with all the gagets but you can't load the roof up or fit a proper roof rack reading the manual and i didn't like having all the stick/steeringwheel controls on the one side and that being the left, i've never had a european car so that tricked me a bit.
Pajero for me if that's what your budget is, it's not worth spending the extra 10k either to get the same spec in a Prado with less power, lower towing capability and probably the same chance of getting the car that left the factory on a friday arvo.

Hi all, Pajero for me had
Hi all, Pajero for me had them for many years and now on the new 3.2l diesel and love it, the one prior was the petrol and I had it for 9 Years and it didn't miss a bet. The issue I have to agree has been the height of the tow hitch, it's a pain but workable. I been towing two types of boats over the years, both fibre glass. Currently she tows the 6.8 patriot with no problems.
Only issue I had todate with the new model has been waiting for ARB to fit it out, which now they cover the model and let again very happy with the work I had had done so far.
Value for money I looked and kitted our the new 3.2l being an exceed with all the fruit and think value for money for me and reliability is really good covering my experience and with service. My last model was also an exceed.
cheers

Like all the comments raised underneath. They havent and wont perform these yests for Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan etc... as they are all top heavy vehicles which would all roll in the event of this particular test especially if you put 20inch wheels on it.
I hope i never have to make this manouvre in question and those of you in the above mentioned cars should hope you wouldnt either.

Cool. Pretty interesting article. It is funny in the video they only show European cars "completing" the test. Drive Arabia seems like a pretty legit website too ;)
For the record I owned a Wrangler for 3 years and it was an unstopable beast. Other than the fact it was like driving a tractor with worse fuel consumption than my old worked V8 SS ute.

Being, a mechanic the list of manufacturers we have here I would have in pretty much the same order. I buy vehicles that I know I wont be fixin much, amongst other things, thus why I just bought a petrol auto lux

So Shonky, are you any better informed now?
It's like Holden V Ford. It never ends.
Just buy the one that will best suit you. There's good & bad about all of them.
The best thing you can do is find a GOOD mechanic who can do your log book servicing and ensure you meet all your warranty requirements.

We bought the 2010 Prado
3litre turbo deisel/auto (wasn't changing 6gears in a manual) and (touch wood) haven't had any issues with it. Towed a 26' tinnie to Midland from Spearwood, didn't even know it was behind us.
We have also a 1993 Toyota Hilux 4 door ute, which has towed the boat up and down from Perth to Leeman since we bought it in 1998. Brilliant didn't know it was behind us sitting on 100klms, bit sluggish on hills but on the flat would sit on the speed mentioned.
When we were thinking of buying a new 4x4 I loved the look of the new Jeep, hubbie asked a few mechanics and was told, "No way buy a Jeep," so we went with the Prado, as the old girl (Hilux) had done us proud. The Hilux is still going strong and is our tow 4x4 for launching/retrieving the boat and beach/bush bashing/fishing, she'll go fo ever. Hopefully the Prado also hahahah

Have a 09/10 NT Paj auto
Have a 09/10 NT Paj auto diesel.
Tows my 5.3 glass boats with ease ( 1 ton+ ? )
Burns 17 litres/100km @ 110km/hr towing the boat.
Uses about 12 litres around town, 10 if I nanna drive it.
If you end up getting a second hand one, check for rust under the rubber door seals on the top of both rear side doors. water can get into the door seams and rust the door from the inside. Its a known issue which can affect fairly new cars. Mine is starting to show the telltale brown stains....
Still love it though.

I Own a 2008 Jeep Commander Limited 3ltr Turbo Diesel, had it since new.
Mate cant knock it, good car, good for towing, never had an issue with it.
Tow's my 3.5 tonne boat about, up to exmouth at 22 ltrs per 100kms.
Dont take the word of all the jeep knockers, most of them dont own or never have owned one.

if you're only looking at
if you're only looking at towing capacity you should consider a holden Colorado (either ute or wagon). It has 3.5T towing, and is a comfortable car. I have a 6 speed manual dual cab, and it's excellent for towing my 18' cuddy. It returns me 9.4L/100km which includes towing my boat, driving on the freeway in peak hour, and the odd freeway run. Having the tub on the back makes minimal difference, and I believe the Auto has extra torque as well.
I got mine for under $38k drive away including tow bar, tonneau, tub liner, tint, mats, and metallic paint. Yes the Ford Ranger and VW Amarok are nicer to drive, but they are almost $20k more expensive for the equivelant models too.
Otherwise, although the Paj isn't the best 4x4 on the road.. value for money they are difficult to beat. Only thing I can recommend is if towing vans and boats regularly you should look to get a vehicle with a full ladder frame chassis. Paj has a monocoche chassis, which is great for driving on the road. But go offroad, or tow regularly and it can cause the body to twist, resulting in doors and tailgates that don't fit properly and begin to warp. Vehicles like Toyota, Nissan, and most Dual Cabs have a ladder chassis. This is because they are designed to go offroad and tow more so than "soccer mum cars" like Paj, Jeep, Kluger and other soft 4x4's.

Done "& dusted
Well guys I've layed out my hard earn't & gone and brought a brand new shiny jeep, it out drives everything I have tried. The Pajero did not even come close in the driving stakes so I think it boils done to personal preferences. And Fisherking your'e dead right mate I am no wiser, probably more confused so fuck it I will run with it and see what happens, (can't be worse than the navara) plus the old lady loves it and she's the minister of finance. If it turns to shit I don't mind admitting I f*cked up and brought a lemon so stay tuned.
Cheers guys

Nice one. I had the same attitude when i bought mine. But that all changed a year down the track when it has proved itself to me, and i have punished it( scratches and dents to prove it )
The old stereotypical view of jeep ( which i also had as a landcruiser owner) and the 4L petrol just dont apply now. The extra 30K you would spend on a landcruiser is a lot of fixing !!
What motor did you get ?

dont get a fj toyota
I bought a brand new fj Toyota last year mainly because I loved the retro look , they are ok but have the worst left hand blind spot I have encounter in a car , the rear obstacle detection sensors drive you insane when you are backing your bout down the boat ramp (detecting the boat trailer), fuel capacity is only 70lt ,no diesel option and only available in auto after 3 close encounters due to the blind spot (and all my fault just couldn't see the others) I canned it and swapped it for a new Nissan and it seems great done 3000k now and no dramas tows the boat great

Not sure
I think the boat weighs about 1500k + 540 for juice + 370 for trailer + fresh water & booze & whatever else I decide to cart along which is why I just go for 3t and the caravans probably worse fully loaded. The Navara handled it but didn't like it and the thought of towing between Canarvon & Karratha horrifies me (filling up Nanutarra).I had a Patrol that made the distance but didn't have the guts.
