Japanese Warranty
Just havin a bit of a winge -
I purchased a fisherman pliers from Plats last october i think it was like 300 bucks, anyway i use it a fair bit when i go fishing but i havent mishandled it in anyway.
Anyway, about 2 months ago i went to open my box only to find the tip of the pliers broken. I told Plats about this and they told me to send it back because it was "Covered" under warranty....however there will be likely to be a cost and i had to send it back to them which i had to pay for it.
Fair enough, I said could u just order me the tips and i will replace them msyelf to saving shipping cost - no can do was the reply.
Well 2 months on got an email from Plats stating my pliers are ready and if i want them back i got to pay like 100 AUD ( fee to fix the pliers additional shipping cost, postage and handling fee). Thats just ridiculous...apparently that is Japanese Warranty - its covered but you still have to pay.
Before I get blasted with comments - you should buy locally blah blah blah - you cant buy it locally!
Oh well just giving heads up if you decide to play from plats and or japan. Ive purcahsed quite a bit of stuff from plats and japan and this is the first time something has gone wrong.

On the general subject of
On the general subject of warranties everyone should be aware there is a thing called Statutory Warranty (with items purchased in Aust at least, not sure where you stand with O/S and may depend on the country) whereby the manufacturer offers a warranty on a product of say 1-3 years etc however under legislation a statutory warranty also applies. That is if it is reasonable to expect a product (time period varies with price paid and type of item) to last a certain period of time you may be covered by a statutory warranty (details available from your local office of business and consumer affairs).
i.e. if you spent $4,000 on a plasma tv and got a warranty of say three years and four or five years later (after manufacturers warranty expires) it stuffs up you are entitled to have the product replaced free of charge as one would expect it to last more then three years (considering the item and price paid etc). May have to argue the point and involve Consumer Affairs but worth keeping in mind.
Secondly when someone offers and extended warranty (to extend the warranty to say five years) for a small fee, tell them to get stuffed as you would expect they would replace it under the statutory warranty anyway - otherwsie they are just ripping you off as extended warranties nearly always fall under the Statutory Warranty period anyway.
Hope that may help someone.
Cheers paul

All to save a dollar
It seems that everything we ,(consumers) buy or want to buy is now made in countries other than original,Penn,Abu Garcia,Jarvis Walker, and almost every other item I can think of is now made in China,My daughters boy friend got an Abu Garcia, egg better type reel, used it twice and the cast allio that is inside the hub was broken in 4 pieces,I actually wrote too Abu and the letter I got back was,too save costs and stay competitive we now must off shore our products to cheaper labor counties,I challenge any of you to got to any tackle shop and try and find an item made in a western country, this is not to say that every thing made in China or else were is crap but I have had hooks straighten ,swivels open,Knives & tools (stainless steel ) rust I would buy Aussie,Yank,or Heaven forbid,Pom if I could but the price is prohibitive in most cases.jersey
