Hillarys was on fire
Submitted by Colin Hay on Sun, 2008-05-25 09:52
It was a great morning to be out fishing off the north wall at Hillarys. A bit overcast and a slight drizzle, but only a very light breeze when I arrived there at 5.30 am. Hillarys was on fire, bait fish jumping around and my baits were getting hit as soon as they hit the bottom. I ended up keeping two big trevally and releasing another seven and five tarwhine.
Only wish I hadn't have been slack and stopped to watch some of the cricket from the West Indies as I think I only arrived for the tail end of the action.
Hope everyone else had a successful day,
All the best, Colin Hay

Think I read that report before
Sounds like you had a great time and a wonderful morning. With all those bait fish jumping, I bet the first cast couldn't be done quick enough and with great anticipation!

With the amount of baby pinkies I have caught inside the marina, I would be very surprised if there older brothers and sisters werent hanging around somewhere outside.

On fire
I thought you meant a real fire Colin...
Went out and about on a Fisheries Volunteer patrol today. i think you left before we got there Colin. Plenty of Herring being caugt all down the coast today. Fishers easily got there bag limits. Saw plenty of small Skip caught and most fishers doing the right thing. Great to see. Glad to hear you caught some keepers Colin.

Thanks everyone
Yeah it was a fantasic morning. I was probably only fishing for about 2 hours, but the fish were going off. I like to fish with two rods and it was becoming difficult as both rods were being hit costantly. The big trevally all came on a rig I had out for snapper. Still haven't caught one there yet, but as Shortly and Daniel said, there are some around and I know that they must copme to the spot I fish.
I did get busted off big time on my soft platic rig, so that might have been something.
You're right Colin. When I tossed by snapper rig out and all the bait lept out of the water around it, I almost fell of the rock platform I was standing in the rush to get to my lighter rod.
Thanks all, I will be hanging to get back down there as soon as possible.

looks like you had some
looks like you had some luck
was down there this arvo for a few hours---
i caught a red mullet/goatfish shortly after arriving and 1 small pinkie later. some guys were getting a few BIG herring and a few yellowtail. saw some bait being chased by something next to the restaurant so chucked around an original rapala floating diver but didnt get anything. went home unhappy as i got busted off at the rocks by a big shape in the water- i was only using 6lb mono tho.

Still fun though SoI
If you catch a few fish and have a few close encounters, I always feel I have had a pretty good day. While big buistoffs are disappointing, it gives you something to aim for next time.

2 rods Colin?
LOL Colin - almost did the 'Oz Samon Butt Dance' - did you just prop the second rod across/against a rock, or have some special rod holder?

I take a piece of polly pipe Colin
Like you would use as a rod holder for beach fishing. I jam that between the rocks and it makes a perfect rod holder. I used to take two to this spot (one for each rod), but there is a round hole in one of the rocks that also makes a great rod holder. Having the rod holders not only allows me to have one rod set out with a larger bait while I use the other one to spin with, throw out unweighted mulies, or soft plastics, it just keeps everything neat and makes it a lot easier when you have to re-bait, get a fish of the hook, etc.

Yup, have the same Colin
I have two sand poly tubes and a couple of those metal 'bream' rod stands.
