Help me decide the most meritorious fish

Hi there. I'm in the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club and our fishing year has come to an end. In the beach/rock fishing area, we have a trophy for the Most Meritorious Fish. I've put together a shortlist, and I'm hoping I can get fellow anglers views on what they think is the best of the bunch. Candidates are: 0.417kg Breaksea Cod 4.120kg Dhufish 2.365kg Spangled Emperor 2.260kg Harlequin 18.720kg Spanish Mackerel 12.760kg Mulloway 17.780kg Samsonfish 0.429kg King George Whiting Some good fish from the shore here, but I think my top 3 (in no order) are Dhufish, Harlequin and Spanish Mackerel. Please let me know what you think. Cheers Belly

Alot of variables in there
Alot of variables in there but if it's from the bech/rocks for perth region then for me the Spanish Mack is a great capture - especially at 18.72kg.
1. Spanish
2. Mulloway
3. Sambo

Then it is no contest in my view
Dhufish, harlequin and Sampson .....sambo third as there are lots of big sambos around that area but any dhu from the shore is an achievement

Depends
I guess so muh depends on the criteria.
Samsonfish are strong fighters but if no line class limitations then not particularly difficult when hooked. Also not rated as a table species.
The Dhu is clearly a highly rated table fish but not substantial in size, nevertheless a meritorious as a landbased capture.
I personally rate Spanish Mackerel as a table fish very highly (perhaps more so than most) and given their strong short term fightiing abilities, at 18kg that is a great capture.
At close to five pound, in the old, both the Harlequin and Spangeledy are meretorious in their own right. I would however suggest that the Emperor is a much more common capture.
Mulloway are average eating, not a great sporting species and a resonably common landbased capture. The KG is relatively small. The Blackarse is the best table fish of the candidates (IMO) but at around a pound in weight, even from the shore, not worthy of a meritorious award.
My ranking (for whats its worth) as follows.
1. Spanish Mackerel
2. Harlequin
3. Dhufish
4. Spangled Emperor
5. Samson fish ( size matters)
6. Blackarse
7.KG
I guess its indicative of the subjective nature of this discussion that I am questioning putting KG last in a list of seven.
Godd luck with your deliberations Belly.

Dhu, Harley then spainyard.
Dhu, Harley then spainyard. No question in my books. If the mulla was the same size as Mackie then that would have made third.
