he wants 'a real fish you can eat"
hi I've joined the forum for my nearly 6 yr old.
He's become very keen on fishing and we have been heading down to Pt Walter and also crawley bay (off the jetty's).
He was quite happy catching a blowy or two and collecting mussels but he's now wanting to "catch a fish I can eat".
I know bugger all about fishing and hubby hasn't done it since he was a kid. We can cast a line and put together a rig ,but we really don't know about what is running, where and when and what we could even try for in the swan. Last night we went to Pt Walter til about 9pm and spoke to someone who said there were tailor running.
So I'm after a few beginner tips for jetty fishing for a little bloke. He's often asking me now if the tide is rising and when we can drop a line in.
I'd love any pointers, links, advice etc. We will be fishing mainly in the swan but can make it out to woodmans point now and then.
Thanks :)

coggee beach jetty just north of woodmans point
Don't even need bait. Maybe some burley and a small sabiki jig is all you need - i cut them in half so I only use three hooks and have two sets - if you don't want to jig, just put a small ball of bread on the hook. Or burley and a small "bloodred" whiting hook and a small piece of anything. You'll get yellowtail, herring and tailor for most part. And tons of squid in the evening on squid jigs. Once you've got your fish for a feed you can throw out a livie and if you're lucky you'll get mac tuna too.
Weekday night parking is not safe. We had a vandalism and car radio theft problem when I was there. Had some idiot try to break my windscreen with a large octopus - gave me bait for a year. Weekends during the day is a lovely family spot for a picnic in the park too with tons of people.
If you want gardies, woodies or kwinana jetty just north of the grain depot is good. Maggots were the hot thing.
North mole with a good sabiki will fill your paint bucket in ten minutes - i've never needed to buy bait in Perth. There's good sabiki and crap sabiki - I use the jap ones. Cost me $1 in Singapore and like $6 in perth. But that is not the best place to bring a 6 year old.
I've not been fishing perth for two years now but bread and butter fish tend to stay in pretty much the same place given the same conditions.

Sabiki is the answer
Sabiki is the answer although I often pimp mine up a bit. Sometimes, if only the gardies are there, then your best bet is maggots on unweighted hooks.

Little bloke pulled in a
Little bloke pulled in a couple of yellowtail, a herring and a garfish. He's stoked :)
And apparently my red lentil patties are better then burley.....I was trying not to be offended that the boys kept throwing them in the water and ever angler on our side would drop a line in while the fish were going silly :/
anyway...thanks so much for the tips, little guy is hooked and wants us to pick up a sabiki. We saw people using them with sucess, tho someone said to me that they are illegal here. Is that true?

the sabiki are only illegal
the sabiki are only illegal if you run more than 3 hooks on them. you can get the 3 hook version or get the longer one and cut down to make a couple of them. in oz you are only allowed to use a rig with max of 3 hooks. sounds like your going to be making some more lentil patties
. and well done to dj for getting a couple of edible fish. you are never going to get any peace now unless you take him fishing

oh well yes..the people
oh well yes..the people definately had more then 3 hooks, I counted 6 on the guy next to us. Good to know these things, I was just going to pick him up something from the local tackle shop and am guessing they wouldnt sell me anything illegal ;)
Don't know how I feel about cooking dinner for the fish....but a mums gotta do what a mums gotta do.

sabiki
They'll sell you anything. I had asked the same thing before and tackle stores kind of avoided the question. I'm not local so I don't mess with the regs. Get the regular sabiki and cut it in half. It will be cheaper, the hook spacing is also better, and it is also easier for a kid to handle without getting tangled. Will also be something fun for the kids to do.
If you rinse them out with fresh water before you go home and hang them to dry once you're back, they will last a few trips before rusting.

with a burley mix get some
with a burley mix get some pollard and some fish oil from a tackle store and mix it through adding a bit of water as you go you can also use chicken fat that some stores sell , just every now and then throw a bit into the water and watch the fish go nuts. another thing you can mix in with the pollard is the batter bits and pieces you get from a fish and chip shop. usually they give it away if you have your own container or bag as they only throw it away .
P.S. dont make the mix too wet as it will only sink and have no affect on the surface

Good to hear it was a success.
One of the better sabikis, Mustard, is two 3 hook sets in the pack already IIRC.
Will also be passing on to my partner that lentils are better fish than human food too. That confirms a long time suspicion of mine.

we went again on friday
we went again on friday night and little bloke tried the sabiki...was fantastic...he loved being so independent, pulling them up on his own ;)
For the lentil patties I used: 1 1/2 cups of red lentils (preboiled and drained), 3 cloves of garlic crushed, mixed with 1/3 grated zuchini, about 1/3 cup of breadcrumbs ( just add til its a good mixture). Each pattie was about 2 Tblspns of mixture rolled in breadcrumbs with a little salt and pepper and lightly fried in extra virgin olive oil.
That was for human consumption ;)
On friday I mixed preboiled lentils, breadcrumbs, and some garlic, with about a Tblspn of oil. We were dropping in pea sized amounts near were the line was going in and the fish were going crazy.
The only bad thing was everytime my little guy pulled up a fish someone would come and take his spot as soon as he turned around lol. But they weren't catching, I think maybe their hooks were too big? and they were using prawn.
Little bloke is hooked tho, he's sat transfixed to a fishing show for the last 15 minutes and decided he wants to catch a snapper...I think he would probably end up in the drink if he tried to pull something up that big lol

how do you use the sabiki's? do you just burley the water up and troll the sabiki through it?

You pretty much just pull it
You pretty much just pull it up through the berley trail. A bit of 'jigging' helps too, keep them moving about.

we just had a small sinker
we just had a small sinker on, and we didn't have to do much jigging, they were just attacking it as soon as it was in the water.
I'll post a pic of him with his fish :)
We are looking at teaching him different knots...but I have to learn how to do them fist ...Im not so great with the knots

Try the jetty near Jojos restaurant in the nights. There can be good flathead and flounder around there and the occassional bream.
I have also been told that there are some good flathead and flounder around some of the other jettys in the Mosman Bay area at the moment.
Get some river prawns, peel them and use a smallish suicide or long shanked hook. Just thread the prawn on, making sure you leave the point and barb just showing. You should only need a small ball or bean sinker which you let run free. You can tie a half a match stick about 12 cm above the hook to stop the sinker running down to hook and getting jammed on.
Make sure you have a rag or a towel and some long nosed pliars because if you do catch a flathead (or a cobbler), you need to be very careful about the spikes near the back of their heads.
Good luck and keep on asking questions, it is great to hear you have a keen young angler in the family.

Forget the albright, no
Forget the albright, no point learning a bum knot.
For that sort of fishing all you need is a uni, palomar or trilene.

Is it illegal to run any
Is it illegal to run any more than 3 hooks on any rig???
I tend to only run single hooks, sometimes a second one as a keeper on big baits. But i have seen the nasty ganghooks, 3 hooks with a friggen treble on the end with a swivel. I understand why, but really dislike the idea of making such a mess of any fish i catch impaling it with a possible 6 hooks just doesnt seem right, let alone 3 hooks!
Cut the sabiki's, way way easier to deal with, and you wont ever regret catching 2 or 3 fish at time instead of 6.. :)

if you read the previous
if you read the previous comments you will see that this topic of running 3 hooks has been covered , you can get the sabiki rigs with 3 hooks .so my guess is they are doing the right thing and only running 3 hooks
