handline fishing quinns rocks

hi havnt fished here yet but have been living in ridgewood for a couple of years and im very close to the quinns rocks area and have recently been put on a white meat only diet and need to catch some fish. i grew up in broome and either fished from the beach with a handline for salmon or shark, or from the rocks with a handline for bluebone, snapper and other reefies so im looking for info regarding handline fishing from the beach in the quinns area. im quite familiar with any tackle that ill need but really need help as far as tides, bait and what i should be targeting at this time of year. im more used to using heavier handlines(75 lbs and up) but if i have to target smaller fish i can easily adapt. appreciate any help and look forward to replies

Hi,

Mindarie Marina might be your best bet to access some deeper water using a handline. There is a platform overhanging the ocean and you can also climb over the rocks if you feel up to it.

Should be able to pick up herring, skippy, squid etc. Maybe a shark if you are prepared to put the time and effort in.

Cheers Steve

Hand line

Tue, 2009-12-15 14:20

You may already know how to get the extra distance using a hand line and a big sand sinker/star.Set up as a paternoster rig and about 6-8 feet up from the sinker put a piece of dowell/thin broom handle about 3 finger widths wide with a groove cut round the centre of it to keep the line from slipping off.As you start to whirl thline round your head gradually let some out untill you have the bit of wood between your middle and ring fingers then really give it heaps. You will get more distance laying your line on a flat rock or the sand than by using the ringcaster/reel.

Hope this is some help

Tue, 2009-12-15 15:08

thanks mate. do the beaches in the quinns rocks area have a bit to offer if you can get your bait out a fair way? do you think i need to target certain spots or can it be worth it to try from any of the beaches around quinns?

Tailor

Used to get a few tailor and herring about a 100-150yards down to the right from where Pearce street runs off Ocean drive from an hour before dark untill 2-3 hours after sunset. There was always picker and whiting. That section of beach is reasonably sheltered by the reef not far offshore

thats great thanks mate, just the kind of thing i needed to hear. in broome when the tide was right in id catch whiting on a light handline with tiny strips of red meat for bait. are they fussier than that here?

Bait

Mulies or fresh fish cut in to strips will work.Whiting will go for small cubes of sheep or ox heart plus the usual prawns and worms.

Keep an eye out

Keep an eye out on the for sale/want to buy section, there are the odd rod and other gear given away to the first person who needs it and some absolute bargains coming up all the time.Only a couple of days back Mako Magic gave away a surf rod that he no longer used and by using rod and reel your catch rates will improve out of sight.
