good story from this morning
went out from mindarie today in hope for some pinkys
we launched about 530am and where anchored and burleying by 6.15
the missus went to cast a bait from the boat when the leader got caught on somthing and took the rod and reel into the drink!
watching this $600 combo slowley sinking i jumped in after it..... missed it completely
now standing on the boat at 630am in trackpants and jumper both soaking wet both sharing some kind words to each other about what just happend.
time started ticking along and around 7am somthing took my bait on the other rod it was a big sting ray after fighting the ray for about 5 mins it came close to the surface attached to it was the braid from the reel that went over board.
turns out the ray ate the bait that was rigged up on the lost combo
i grabbed the braid and cut the ray loose however the sunken reels bail arm was still open so we starting pulling up the braid meter by a meter for 300 meters and then before our eyes the rod and reel came slowley up to the surface
what a story hope who ever reads this has a good laugh.
wont catch em sitting at home!

Straight to the service shop for that reel!
Will probably need all new bearings anyway, but give it a fighting chance and get it all stripped down and serviced.
After a scenario such as what you made mention, perhaps something else needs to be stripped down and serviced also! Hahaha
what sort of rod and reel out of curiosity?
we have had a couple of occasions now of bust offs at the braid, where someone fishing directly next to it has hooked the braid with the fish still attached (like bodies huge coral trout in Exmouth). But never a lost combo recaptured the same day. At least you can now laugh about it as opposed to kissing $600 goodbye.

Hey travis
Do yourself a favour and at least take whatever side plates and the top rotor off (take off as much as you feel comfortable doing and have the schematics before you strip some of it). I had a daiwa 2000 that had a 10 second dunk in the Mandurah estuary that I stripped as soon as I got home that night. Because I got onto it asap, and cleaned / sprayed the internals with inox, the reel is now still as good as the day I bought it. Even the small dunk in the salt water allowed some to get inside the internals, and would have corroded the heck out of it without prompt action.

Had the same with a 2500 sustain
about 10 seconds in, stripped it back and good as gold. Had to replace drag washers though as they were never right afterwards!

getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.

That reminds me of a similar story
That's an awesome story! Also reminds me of a similar experience. was anchored up fishing about 2kms offshore in Busselton as a kid and when I pulled the anchor had a hand line attached to it. I then reeled that in and there was a stingray on the end of that. Haha

Nice one. I had similar
Nice one. I had similar happen to me a few years ago as well. Off the rocks at night rod just disappeared cast my other outfit in all directions, I hooked the line wound in my rod and then wound in the stingray! yeehaa bloody good feeling hey!
Shame you missed it on the first dive! A mate dropped his combo overboard in 40m, emptied his pockets dove in and came up like a mutton bird with the rod in his mouth! Classic!
