squid, Prawn pieces and maggots being the best bait even bread pieces work well. on a small long shanked hook no heavier than 5kg line. any time durin the day just berley up and they will come to you.
Most people use a float with about 40-60cm line dropping down to a drifting long shanked hook. Or a berley blob instead of float. Just cast in the berley trail and thats it, the bait drifts down right on their noses.
gardies have very good eyesight so its best to use very light line, a very small hook, tiny bait and a long distance between your float and the hook. i use 1-2kg line, at least 1.5m trace and a size 10 hook. the best days to catch them are when there is a bit of wind because the better the conditions are the easier it is for the gardies to see your line. ive found the best bait for gardies is either maggots, prawn or tiny cubes of other fresh garfish. also, lots of berley
