Furuno vs Lowrance

Hey All

Gonna replace the fish finder on my boat.  Wanna buy a colour combo unit that's gonna give nice pictures and is easy to use.  Willing to Bring Out Another Thousand.... :-)

I'm fishing around the drop-off, so it wants to work well in shallow sandy bottoms but I wanna work my way up to deeper stuff (not going to take my 17ft Baron 100nm out too often though ;-) )

From my homework it looks like Furuno vs Lowrance HDS

Tips and pointers greatly appreciated

Cheers

Tim

Dear god not again! This is very well covered already, use the search function.

This has been done to death but basically it comes down to Furuno sounders are better, but the lowrance ones are cheaper and often adequate. Personally I don't much like the smaller Furuno combo units, but there are probably new ones coming out this year sometime. Lowrance GPS functions are actually pretty good.

Common question -

Sun, 2012-01-01 19:01

Wanna buy a colour combo unit/Furuno vs Lowrance HDS

Tim, if your looking at a "combo unit" then the Lowrance unit has to be the best pick when you weight up dollars spent.

If your looking at just a colour sounder then the Furuno would be the better pick.

Feel free to drop us a PM if you have any questions.

thx till - did use the search - found some info

how good are both models at sandy and weedy bottoms?

at the moment I've got a LS4100 that just gives me stupid readings, if any at all - what if I just get a GPS/plotter for now and a sounder later - what would I go for then?

Typical, I only just got my HDS-10 a month ago.

Had a look on the net and apart from the faster processor for moving around on the GPS (woopty doo), Structure Map overlay which you need the structure scan module for (don't think I'd use this in 30-60m), and having the screen split into four, what other differences are there (especially in the most important part, the sounder)?

Am I wrong - Lowrance = US

Sun, 2012-01-01 19:52

Am I wrong - Lowrance = US brand, made in china = low life expectancy - more bells and whistles

Furuno = Japanese brand, made in Japan = long life expectancy - less bells and whistles

What do you call a lada niva with twin tail pipes?

Mon, 2012-01-02 14:04

A wheelbarrow.         How do you double the value of a lada niva?Put a full tank of fuel in it.         What is the difference between putting your hand down the front of african americans pants and driving a lada niva?  You feel a bigger d!c# driving the niva.

take a look at the side imaging.

the 798 is a very good unit and the side imaging will show up all the KG hidy holes (sand) amongst the weed

you get free software upgrades also when they come out
