Full moon fishing?

Hi all,

I've never really paid much attention to lunar cycles, tides and the like in the past - just gone and wet the line whenever I have felt like a fish. I recently picked up an Angler's Almanac and this has piqued a bit of an interest in the topic.

Currently the moon is in the 'waxing gibbeous' phase - about 95% of full and in decline.

I'm planning and heading out for a fish up at Cervantes tomorrow - targeting gardies in the arvo, Tailor at dusk and a decent sized shark on the big rig (I'll take anything though). Keen to hear what other people's experience has been like with the moon in this phase - particularly targeting those fish?

Cheers,

Buschy. :)

I am starting to think full moon fishing is a waste of time

Sun, 2009-12-06 16:03

As Sherbs said the tailor don't mind, but I think the bait fish tend to hide because it is too light and the fish that eat them tend to think it is a waste of time.
The new moon seems to be working better for me lately.

A couple of days either side

Sun, 2009-12-06 16:32

I think the general feeling I am getting and my own experience is that a couple of days either side of the full moon works but fishing on the actual full moon itself generally results in strange happenings.......... Fishos get quite pissed on overnighters because not a lot happens or they don't fish because everyone says it's a waste of time.

Some tales I have heard is that it's best to fish for Mulloway either side of the full moon but not on it. I know it's a waste of time going for Crays in the "moon week" as the Okkies get stuck right into them.

In general however, you need to match the tides, the weather and the moon to get a perfect mix. If the weather is good and you're prepared to fish either side of a high tide regardless of the moon, the chances of getting fish are better. The almanacs try to weigh these things up and predict spawning periods and hence, feeding instances. I find it a bit like reading my star sign.... it sounds good sometimes......
