Fuel Containers for extended trip

 Hi Guys,

Doing a trip to the Monties in about 4 weeks time. Am looking at taking 400L of fuel. Will be in a fiberglass boat so must be plastic. I was looking at 44s but there is ownly two of us and could end up beign very difficult to move and refill the boat with.

Probably chasing 60 or 120Ltr drums if avalaiable. Does anyone know where i could source these from?

If not i guess we will  have to buy 20 Jerry Cans, at $35 each its going to get expensive.

Thanks

Just go down to your local panel beater and ask if they have any 60tr drums lying around and what sort of beer they like.

Hi Dhuvinile,

I am heading to the Montes next Monday, i will be carrying 400 litres in plastic 20 litre jerryies, this is my 6th trip so i have collected a few over the years, but did buy 1 more from Malz in Balcatta yesterday, $ 24.95, but I reckon you could get a deal if you wanted a few.

I have done it with 60 litre drums, but it gets hard to move them around and the servos dont like you filling them up when in the boat.  There is also a risk of rust or loose paint on the inside so I go Jerries now.  I used to sit them on a piece of conveyor rubber and wrap up in a poly tarp then ratchet strap them down to stop damaging the boat

either way, pick up a jiggler siphon, much easier than trying to pour the fuel in.

If you want any more Montes info, drop us a pm

cheers, kev

Another option, you can get a flexible bladder rated for fuel, a mate got one to fit his kill tank and had a 12 volt transfer pump to get the fuel out.

I went one step further Nd had the kill tank removed and second fuel tank put in its place.

yep had one made by liquid containment from queensland, meets Aust standards. Wasnt a 12v pump, it was a rotary hand pump, emptied 165ltr in 5 minutes

i sent them pics and dimensions of the kill tank and they made to fit, but you need a breather hose, so had to cut hole in kill tank lid

there is a place in midland next to the railway line that sells refurbished 60l drums, its near the Morrison Road lights, i got 5 from there a few years ago for $20 each, but as Mongoose says, they are a pain in the a......

 Hey Fellas,

Thanks for your replies. I can get ahold of 2 x Plastic 200L enclosed drums. That should do us for the extra fuel. We will then be using an electric pump to top up the tank when needed.

Calculated that 200l of unleaded weighs about 160kg and we will use about 120l going over to the camp sight so after transfering some fuel out of each drum that brings the weight down to around 120kg, should be manageable with 2 pwople.

As much fuel as you can

Sun, 2014-03-30 04:53

As much fuel as you can carry, we usually take 750 litres and use every bit of it.  It helps if you have a good idea of how much your boat uses and dont forget to leave some to get home.
