Fly Line Connections
Submitted by GusG on Tue, 2008-07-01 16:20
I am spooling up my 9wt outfit. I need to connect the 50lb braid backing to the fly line. Any ideas on the best way to connect it?
Thanks
Gus

A couple to
A couple to try:

I remember reading something about this a while ago, and theres some knot, perhaps a nail knot that goes through the fly line before wrapping around, then they use some kind of glue like pliobond. Seemed to me like it was pretty strong, and I think they mentioned something about it being pretty damn strong, but I cant remember where I saw it.
edit: not that I know much about fly fishing, but would it be possible to put a dacron loop on the end of the fly line, then tie a bimini in your braid and catspaw them together, like how you attach a windon. You could then change fly lines a bit easier (as far as I remember theres different types for diff situations). I like the cross loop as its a bit easier to undo. No idea whether its the way to go, but might be worth looking into (and should be pretty sturdy and low profile).

The cross loop is
The cross loop is interesting, I might try and undo my cat's paw to try that.
Its probably a bit OTT but that alan tani has a photo of a piece of mono spliced into hollow dacron, and you can probably see some details on a page describing how to make wind on leaders. If you find a good one please let me know =)

Nice
Thanks Hlokk, good info there. The nail less nail knot looks the goods. I saw something very similar in the Geoff Wilson book.
I want to make sure I get it completely right. I do not want to be hooked on to a smoking fish and lose it and the fly line because the knot slipped or cut throught the fly line. Braid is tricky stuff and I reckon it would be pretty unforgiving on the fly line.
I use braided connectors on lighter stuff (and when connecting the leader) but again I am not sure how the braid would treat it, it may wear through it pretty quick I reckon.
I need a very smooth knot so that it runs through the guides very easily when a fish is heading out to sea at a great rate of knots.

I had also thought of doing a tony jones type knot from the braid to a short length of mono and then the mono to fly line connection but I want to keep it simple. The more knots the more points where things can go wrong and fall apart.

I had a better link somewhere but not sure where I put it. Theres a few guides with pictures and more info though. Easier just to buy them though :p
I think I was thinking of the needle knot: http://www.midcurrent.com/articles/knots/fernandez_connection.aspx. They used some glue as well. I've got some UV activated stuff that doesnt go stiff like super glue (but you could use that as you thread the line through to hold inside the fly line). The line should bite in a little though, so perhaps not glueing where it goes inside the fly line would be better?
Best to test the knot to 90% breaking strength if you're not confident with it. (water in a bucket or tub is a good way to avoid putting on sudden weight).

We made our own dacron
We made our own dacron windon leaders for the Broome Salifish tournament qite a few years back, the leaders were good for a while but we used some 6 months later (the leaders were 6 months old) and they failed, pulling the leader out of the dacron. These were all ensured with a dob of superglue which appeared to go brittle, Anyone else had similar experience? I'm sure the ready made ones are a lot better.

Hi Gus
Mate you can buy pre-made loops from most tackle shops that are made from mono that has been weaved to form a tube, then looped and threaded back into its self. All you have to do is thread your fly line up the center of the mono tube weave, secure the end of the weave with a nail knot to the fly line and prestoe its done. When pressure is applied to the line the mono tightens around the flyline and grips, just use a bimini in your braid and cats paw it to the nylon loop. Any probs let me know and i will try to get a picture.

wind-ons
Daisy,
I dont make wind-ons (know how to however) and the best glue to use is Selleys multigrip. This stuff is more pliable where as supa glue goes brittle and seperates!
I buy the Richter wind-ons and have had a good run but always replace periodically!
Cheers

Whip!
I always whip the end of my synthetic leader loops as well as using the plastic tube. I've had them pull on big fish when i didn't whip the ends of the loop.... many years ago now. Very important to do if ya want to keep your flyline and fish under fatiqueing situations!
