Finding beach gutters in the dark??
Submitted by Wet Dreams on Fri, 2010-01-22 19:32
Hi all,
Going for an early morning fish at Myalup 2moro and just suddenly dawned on me....how do you lot find the gutters/places to fish when its pitch black?
Possibly a stupid question but had to ask haha. Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers Sam.

That is not a stupid question Wet Dream
In fact, it is a very good question.
Just how easy it is to find a gutter in the dark will depend a lot on what sort of surf is running and what the moonlight conditions are.
If there is enough moon, or you have a really good lighting system, so may be able to work out where the white water from a wave starts to disappear and thrn where the wave reappears. That area in between will be where the gutter is.

Look for where the waves pan
Look for where the waves pan out in shore. So where waves/whitewash disipate faster than other areas.
Also rips will sit off the side of deeper gutters.

Thanks for replies
Cheers for all the replies. Yeah thats why i asked about the gutters cuz i knew they changed very quickly, so wouldnt matter where they were the day before cuz they'd shift. I'll just point the spotties on the fourbie sideways out to shore as i drive down the beach haha.

Another way to find beach gutters that are close in to shore at
night is to run down to heave a big cast wearing a headlamp with low batteries, stuble over a small drop near the shore line and fall into the gutter. But that is another story.

Hee Hee It was a few moons back and I used to fish with a big
glass rod and an old Shimano overhead. It was a pretty heavy duty outfit so you needed to get a bit of mementum up to launch a big fillet out. I came steaming down the beach to launch the big bait out, stumbled over a ledge and went head first into a deep gutter right next to the shore. Thankfully those old Shimano overheads were as tough as and I was able to keep fishing after shaking all the water off. I froze my hutt off though for the rest of the night.

Woops haha
Bet that would have been fun..a bit closer than you thought hey haha. Went for a fish this morning and was very productive. Was good fun sight casting for the tailor and herring, then smashing the bait at the surface and jumping. All on my bream setup too haha. Tally at the end was:
17 Herring (green lumo)
1 Tailor (green lumo)
1 Tarwhine (prawn)
9 Whiting (prawn and green lumo)
Weapon of choice was the good old green lumo tube under a float, worked a treat.
