Make sure the wraps are tight and do more, I make the knot at least an inch long for heavier outfits

Doing something wrong.

It works quite well for me in a wide range of braid/leader combinations, right down to 4lb braid to 8lb leader. Remember to give it a good pull after tying the first half hitch.

Also, it's fairly critical to maintain tension on the braid as you "wrap" the mono/fc around it...I personally do this by tying a Bimini Twist to create a double in the braid, then hooking it over the reel handle before tying the FG.

Works fine on my 20 and 30Lb braid to 40-60Lb leader. You might have to do a few extra wraps. I did do it once on 4Lb braid to 10Lb leader but i think i have lost my magnifying glass now. Damn that stuff is hard to see.

 Cheers and thanks

i will keep trying as it looks like a good knot, easier through the guides than the Albright that I usually do.

it should work.

two things--1)don't have too much tension on the braid, you need a bit, but, too much, and it will just bunch up. and

2) keep pulling the mono tight between wraps. a total of 20 wraps, 10 each way, has always worked for me. Pull it tight after the first half-hitch, i actually put 4 half hitches, but that's just me.Using up to 120lb mono with 50 lb braid, has never failed. More commonly 50lb braid to 60 or 80 mono. i used the Albright, and the variation , the Tangle knot, for many years and the FG just beats them both, hands down. And you don't need to bother with doing a double if you do it right, just more work. + 1 for using rod tip to keep a little tension on. I go down to 30lb braid and 80lbmono, no issues

 Ive noticed some leaders

Sun, 2017-03-26 19:24

Ive noticed some leaders dont allow the braid to dig in as well as otger leader brands. I also melt the mono to a ball right up against the braid it definitely helps the braid from slipping off

Hey mate the FG knot is my go to knot now.

From my heavy gear right down to my symetre 500, (yes 500!) and 4lb braid with 8lb leader.

I found at one point my knots wouldn't hold upon testing, I was actually tying them wrong.

Watching tutorials online now has me being able to tie these knots on the boat no worries.

Nathan from Big angry fish has a great tutorial on YouTube, check it out.

I use the Knot Assist 2.0

I use the Knot Assist 2.0 tool to tie my fg's, haven't had a failure yet. Around $55 online or $90 at Bluewater

Why on earth would you need that?

$90 for something you just don't need, or does it tie them for you while you are pouring a coffee  I've never had  a failure with them, either.

 G'dayFG Knots are great.

 G'day

FG Knots are great.  I've checked a few ways of tying and ended up with my own modified method and later found this video below which uses a similar method.

I usually put a rod in a rod holder and hold the braid in a vice (in the shed) and don't have it super tight and use the rod tip flex to help keep things tight.

Some people like those knot tying tools but I personally can't see the need for one, some land based fishos like them

simple FG

I tie the FG same as that vid. Rod in holder, braid in teeth works great. Easy as to do on the boat too.

I agree this is the easiest way to tie the FG. Stuffed up my first attempt and they've been fine since then!
