FAD's ?
Submitted by Watto069 on Fri, 2008-10-17 12:27
Hi all
I have never fished the FAD's but would like to do so now that I have a bigger boat. What is the best time to fish the FAD's and what sort of rods and tackle should I use. Do you use teasers?

FADS
Dont think there is any about this time of year.
I think they get taken out around september time, not 100%.
Usally fish for dolphinfish around them with lures or bait.
Guess you could get bonito and other pelagics around too.
Light to medium spin gear would be ok. You can also troll around them.

FADs will go out in early
FADs will go out in early Nov and should be fishable by the end of Nov, but all you will likely get at that time are smaller fish till Feb.

fads
yeah best time of yeat to fish the fads off perth is may - october, although they're hard to find, they are out there, you just have to keep looking for them. and if you cant find them, LOOK HARDER.
the worst time to fish them is february - may. dont even bother goin out there late april may, cos its not worth it. DEFINATELY NO FISH OUT THERE FROM FEBRUARY TO MAY. DO NOT GO OUT THERE FEBRUARY TO MAY.
the fishing out there can be red-hot at times. i've been out there once, and we were catching HUGE blowfish all day, and every now and then, we would catch a good size herring.
really good fun, but NOT WORTH $200 FUEL, FOR A HERRING OR TWO.
cant wait till they deploy the fads next may. ;)

I believe the Mahi are there
I believe the Mahi are there throughout the year. The FADs just make they easier to locate. Some folks say that they are weather/temp dependant, but 2 seasons ago after the FADs were pulled in I got one on a drift bait, when targeting tuna.
The smaller ones tend to hog the FADs early in the season, making them easy target, but go easy on them as some learn what to avoid later in life. Having said that several I landed last year had a hook in the mouth but I caught one with 3 hooks and a lure in it's mouth and Till hooked one trailing about 50m of yellow braid as well.
Before releasing them, please remove all the hooks.

I've never been silly enough
I've never been silly enough to take anything less than 10lb. I believe its the cause of a FW skipper's 20lb rule. The braid that was in the fishes' mouth was attached to a triple gang and quite heavy, probably 30lb.
