not good at all, i have heard of it hapening before with alveys but not a new one. if it didnt go then it could have gone when the line was put under pressure. i cant believe they didnt just replace it right then but i spose they got to send it away to the manufacturer for testing, then they should replace the line as well as the reel as i wouldnt trust the line now its fraid

usually a sign of the line

Thu, 2009-10-15 21:49

usually a sign of the line going on too tight .. saw one pop under load from cliff fishing ... also had a reefmaster deck winch shatter once due to same problem .. all alveys need to run low stretch mono (i run braid under mine with a top shot of 80m of mono)

mate, who sold you the reel?

Fri, 2009-10-16 06:57

that is absolute bullshit.

if you buy ANY faulty peice of equipment from ANY shop, it is the shops responsibility to replace it, NOT THE MANUFACTURER (the shop then takes it to the rep/manufacturer).

THIS IS A LITTLE THING CALLED A LAW.

it doesnt matter whether you buy a reel, or a computer, a mobile phone, or a house. the place you paid for your item, is the place that is accountable.

if they tell you otherwise, THEY ARE WRONG.

do not take no for an answer.

Its not seen much these days

Its not seen much these days with the advent of Braid, however as you may have noticed mono wound on at high pressure can explode Alvey spools.

A mate of mine bought an Alvey a while ago and he was telling me how this could happen. He also added that the people who sold him the reel told him that they should be spooled with low stretch mono or braid. Maybe the people who sold you this one could have mentioned it. I think it's called knowing your product. Mind you another mate has got heaps of them and think his are spooled with normal mono and he's never had problems.

GO BLUES.

Heard of it happening to a reef queen not that long ago

Fri, 2009-10-16 09:22

thought it may have been in relation to fishing with heavey weights due to deep sea fishing. Reel was replaced. Good luck.

You would if it was positive feedback, but that's discraceful. It was a faulty product they sold you, full stop.

Well before

Fri, 2009-10-16 20:10

Alveys were around a long time before braid was common. Used to use the 651 for ballooning from Quobba in the early days, have heard if it happening but never seen it before........made a hell of a mess.

Should be replaced,if it's a half decent store. Let them take it up with the reps

Good Luck...

Yeah kind of weird, its not

Fri, 2009-10-16 20:42

Yeah kind of weird, its not like alveys are braid friendly, they really ought to be able to hack what mono was offering, that was all that was on offer after all.

Abu 10.000ca

Fri, 2009-10-16 20:12

Saw a mate explode the spool on an Abu 10,000ca loaded with 50lb braid while hooked up to what we thought may have been a big cod off the jetty up here.Had it on for over an hour, when it took off it went at about half walking pace for maybe 300 yds then slowly swam out and around the end. With about 50 yards to wind in bang it went, blowing both ends almost right off---good bye to what ever it was.

extreme pressure

Fri, 2009-10-16 20:32

yep , i had the same happen a few years ago fishing at wilbinga , hooked a big shark of the beach and got it in , then a short while later, bang went the reel , looked just like the picture, even though it was 2 years old i took it back to the agent and he took it up with Alvey and they replaced the spool only even though it was all to do with line shrinkage after fighting the fish with mono, i would report it to Alvey direct if the shop won't,  does indicate sometimes how much pressure there is under load with mono shrinkage

Take it up with Alvey if

Sun, 2009-10-18 09:31

Take it up with Alvey if your not having any joy with the shop?

Im going to let a tip out of the bag.

When winding on Alveys the line should be put in a bucket of water where by the mono can take up the moisture and swell prior to going on the reel with Alveys.

With the modern advent of braid people are obsessed with extremely tight line on spools.  With mono its not neccessary and obviously with Alveys even less the case.

It can happen with graphite spools or has in the pass where mono line went on too hard then it gets wet, expands and crushes the spool.  Some monos absorb some water a bit.

Is the line 24kg?

Speak to Alvey, see what they say. Be warned though that this is nothing new with people over tightening line on Alveys and the spools exploding.
