Dangers of Boating at Night
Submitted by Fozz on Thu, 2009-05-28 21:47
On nightshift at the moment and just heard over the VHF that 6mtr quintrex has just run a ground on Conflict reef (Hampton Harbour, Dampier). All 5 onboard taken off to hospital with injuries and the boat high and dry until the AM high tide. Just goes to show you can never be too careful and one would think a boat this size would a have a sounder & gps onboard too.

From what ive heard, this
From what ive heard, this happens quite often in Dampier.
Driving at dark in a harbour or around islands is uaually done quite slow. to put all 4 people in hospital, doesnt sound like they were driving too slow

Isnt there a 12 knot max
Isnt there a 12 knot max rule for at night, I dont know that it is a written rule. I know that at night I go fairly slow.

No limit at Sea
There is no limit in the open ocean. It is up to the skipper to determine a safe speed. Obviously the skipper of this vessel will be investigated having caused the accident.
I was out on the water at night a few years ago and saw a boat flash past me at anchor and then came to screaming halt when he hit a cray rope. No damage/injuries luckily
The only restriction in on the river which is 8 knots at night.

Here we go again
Can recall this happening in Mandurah on New years eve just gone.
The SES were very red faced about the whole thing. Man it was a site to see the whole boat and motor were sitting on the top of the rock wall on the south side of the new bridge when you cross into Halls Head.
No booze there it was just bad navigation, the guys had just finished helping out on the foreshore.
Its a little late to head home early

I think Conflict reef is
I think Conflict reef is within harbour limits which is 8 knots, as the Fozz says surprised they didn't have or weren't watching the GPS, sounder. Common sense goes a long way too, boating at low tide and at night anywhere is no time to be blaz'e.

Conflict Reef
Has a lighted marker on it since Deckem Charters hit it and it is outside or just inside the 8 knot limit
